"This is a heartbreaking loss, and no words can capture the pain of losing a child. My sincere condolences go to the family during this profoundly difficult time,"

If I could I would kick every antivaxer right in the face because of this.

Antivaxxers are directly responsible for this.

Children under five, pregnant individuals and people with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk from measles infections.

Source: The damn article if people took the time to read it.

Canada has been having a measles surge due to antivaxx activity, that puts these 2 groups at higher risk.

[-] Eranziel@lemmy.world 34 points 6 days ago

Yes. And measles is so contagious and deadly that the only way to protect those groups is by vaccinating enough other people. This is why measles vaccines have been such a huge focus for the past 50+ years.

And that is also why antivaxxers are directly responsible. Their willful ignorance and self-entitlement exposes these vulnerable groups to harm.

[-] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 27 points 6 days ago

Those groups rely on herd immunity to prevent infection in the first place. Measles is so virulent that the threshold is 94% of the population. The population as a whole is under that threshold now because of anti-vax dipshits. They are directly responsible for every death in vulnerable populations that cannot receive the vaccine directly.

Most people have read more than this article can hope to explain.

Pointing at the most vulnerable and saying thats why they died from it is crazy when we can prevent it from happening at all with a vaccine thats been around for longer than I've been alive.

If it wasn't for idiot anti vaxxers we wouldn't be hearing reports of measles killing people more and more.

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 10 points 6 days ago

Ah yes, fuck herd immunity, everyone is out for themselves now, good luck children!!!!1!

[-] jimmy90@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

maybe they will learn from these mistakes

otherwise natural selection will take its course

maybe they will learn from these mistakes

Nope.

“They believe she’s better off where she is now.”

This sounds like an abortion with extra steps.

[-] npcknapsack@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

“My kid is dead but it’s not as bad as the media is making it out to be.” Wut.

Well, I guess at least that child has been saved from the scourge of autism or something? Those people shouldn’t be parents.

[-] DonkMagnum@lemy.lol 2 points 3 days ago

Way to go Alberta, you reaking cesspit.

[-] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 16 points 6 days ago

That's horrifying. I truly believe that the family should attempt to sue RFK Jr. and the Trump Administration. Is that something that can be done? I know that international lawsuits are complicated, but it seems like there was a pretty clear cut cause here. Disinformation purposefully spread by a foreign government and its officials. My condolences to the family.

Baby caught measles from mom, mom likely also wasn't vaccinated, which even if she's young predates Trump and the lowly worm. Babies can't be vaccinated against measles until they're older, they've even started doing it at 6 months but definitely not at birth. So this is a gift from religious conservatives of the sort that have always been in Alberta and not vaccinating. This trend began many years before this, and I would say really started to surge in about 2002-ish.

[-] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 days ago

I think the whole thing started in 98 with Wakefield and his claim that MMR vaccine caused autism.

If I remember correctly he wasn’t even an antivaxer rather he wanted to sell his schedule.

[-] RoquetteQueen@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago

Antivaxxers have existed for as long as vaccines have existed, but he and Jenny McCarthy sure popularised the movement.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

McCarthy recanted, but Robert DeNiro is still antivaxing because he won't admit having kids over 40 is a huge risk to autism, and he's still having children at 80.

[-] RoquetteQueen@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

I'm glad she has recanted. Never thought she would.

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Def began there, but early social media like Livejournal and its crunchy moms is what caused it to thrive. And since then weaponized disinformation from Russia has kept it briskly turning.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Just a PSA, you can still get measles even if you're vaccinated. It is rare, but it is possible. Lets not jump to conclusions on the mom here. (Though I agree with the rest of your comment)

Fair enough. Probably not a case in this scenario then. Still, something fitting what I described is probably coming soon. Little kid gets sick from an American tourist, ends up dead. I'm almost surprised that I haven't heard of something like that happening before.

[-] twopi@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

If you could sue Trump over this. The Americans will try to sue China over Covid.

[-] twopi@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

Frrreeeeeeeeeduuuuuuumb!!!!!!!!!!!!

[-] non_burglar@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

I usually don't care about the the title, but your modifications to the original change the meaning of that headline substantially.

What is it with posters here just not understanding this rule? It's like the only rule... Is it bots?

[-] bogpunk@lemmy.ca 32 points 6 days ago

I think this may be more of an issue of the article's title being changed after the post is submitted. If you hover over the link to see the article URL, it originally had the same title as this post
