Your choice of screen shot makes it look like a statement. Fortunately, you made the right choice.
The fact that the cursor points at the correct pronunciation is purely by accident.
Sure
'g' in 'gin'
If you guys won't get along we'll have to compromise and go with the g in 'rough'
Another good choice! Cheers to that!
Gesus!
It's a nice chord
what if its actually pronounced with the dutch g?
Jo fuck yourself, you knew what you were doing with your example. Now I'm irrationally angry at half the people in this thread.
Man, honestly. I thought using GIF as an example would be a funny way to illustrate this genuinely cool feature. I expected some craziness but not at this level. People comment with passion, holy hell.
I just thought throwing gasoline on the fire would make it become "wet fire", I had no idea what I was doing!
Jraphical Interchange Format
This belongs in shitpost. Bravo on on kicking the hornet's nest.
We should find a solution everyone will hate. I suggest no more acronym and stick to initialism.
If the entire internet was replaced with just wikipedia i don't think I'd mind
good news! you can download the whole of wikipedia (minus the images) for a few gigs.
giggidy!
Thats pretty cool, thanks. I am having a hard time translating phonetic notation into sunds in my head :D
G as in gif
Every day we stray further from Jod
Uh, excuse me, "GOD" is actually an acronym for "Great Omniscient Deity", so it's actually pronounced /'paɪnæpl/.
I can't read IPA, but choose to believe that's pronounced 'pineapple'
When the guy that names it tells you how it's pronounced, that is the pronunciation.
I can think of other groups that intentionally mispronounce names to belittle others.
nope, that's not how language works. sure you can suggest it and people might go along, but you have no control over how words are said, especially if you don't use intuitive spelling.
Of course guy is pronounced like juy.
This was only a controversy because GIFs were falling out of favour and the format's creator decided to stir up shit.
Reminds me of the stuff with Harry Potter. "Oh wait Hermione is Black, Dumbledore is gay, oh and trans women aren't real women." It's just to get people talking about something that has run its course... and oh look, a new Harry Potter series coming to HBO. Because it works.
The actual pronunciation of GIF doesn't matter. We say GIF with a hard G because the G stands for Graphics and that has a hard G. Some say it with a soft G because that makes it sound like Jif and they like peanut butter...? I guess? I doubt it's because someone said that's how it was meant to be pronounced. Honestly I think Jif sounds better, but that doesn't mean it's right. I prefer the English pronunciation of garage (rhymes with carriage) to the American (rhymes with barrage) but in the States I pronounce it the American way because I want to be understood... not because it sounds better. I could give a fuck how something sounds; language is about communication. And if you're saying "Jif," we still know what you mean, but we think less of you for either not knowing better, or are just pedantic — exactly how I expect to be received if I pronounce "garage" like I think it's meant to be said.
and trans women aren't real women
That wasn't to stir up controversy, that's just Rowling being a piece of shit. She regularly supports groups aiming to strip rights from people and has openly stated that any money from Harry Potter is a direct endorsement of her abhorrent views. The only ethical move is to boycott anything related to the franchise.
We say GIF with a hard G because the G stands for Graphics
I pronounce it that way because its gift minus the t. "Graphics" has nothing to do with it, since I don't pronounce JPEG as Jay-pheg.
Some say it with a soft G because that makes it sound like Jif and they like peanut butter...? I guess? I doubt it's because someone said that's how it was meant to be pronounced.
Thats a silly thing to doubt, when the creator said that's how he intended it. I also often say it the right way just to irritate people who sound as insufferable about it as you, though.
And Rowling is clearly leaning a lot harder into TERFdom than just wanting to stay "relevant." Don't minimize the pain and suffering she causes with her bigotry like that.
Fun fact: in old English, /j/ (the sound in Yes) was written using a g (often written as ġ in modern old English transcriptions)
Make of that what you will
It's pronounced yiff, because its the most popular format for furry porn.
