If your company has control over what you're allowed to say, you do NOT, in fact, have a good job.

Fair point but if you're a licensed professional you probably don't have the ability to publicly say whatever you think. Fuck me for enjoying my chosen profession, apparently.

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 58 points 1 week ago

I work for the elected officials of my left leaning state government. I think Charlie Kirk was a piece of shit. The violence saddens me, but I am not sorry he is gone. I still have to observe decorum, no matter my feelings.

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 22 points 1 week ago

Decorum forcing people to only say nice things about a piece of shit person because any criticism or expressing happiness that he is gone being misconstrued as supporting the way in which he died is bullshit though.

[-] ceenote@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Being forced to say nice things about him would, indeed, mean you have a shitty job. Consequences for saying negative things about him is different. On social media that's identified with me or easily traced back to me I say nothing about Charlie Kirk. Lemmy, on the other hand...

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago

No one is forcing me to say nice things about him at work. I just can't openly talk trash about him at my job, which means I say nothing. Even without being in a government job, don't most people avoid politics in the work place anyway? I'm here on Lemmy because my comments can't be linked to my actual life and job.

How you die does not redeem how you lived. You do not become a hero in your death when you were a weapon of the enemy in your life.

Pastor Howard-John Wesley on Charlie Kirk's death.

Never believe that [bigots] are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The [bigots] have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

IMO it's fully decorated to say "I was taught that if you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything. For that reason, I will not be talking about Charlie Kirk."

[-] SARGE@startrek.website 6 points 1 week ago

Mm yes, it wouldn't be proper

Jobs under capitalism are just wage slavery/servitude. The "privileges" you are allowed will change with time or workers movements. But the relationship of exploitation hasn't changed here. The level of control in the existing exploitative relationship is what is changing. It's the relationship of capitalism evolving into what we call fascism.

[-] vzqq 7 points 1 week ago

It doesn’t have to be good good. Just good enough to keep your chronically ill child insured.

[-] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 51 points 1 week ago

If my company is looking at my Lemmy posts all I can say is what a huge waste of time and resources.

[-] Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

There's a concerted effort by a group of trolls/facists to scrape the web then doxx the commenters and have meemaw and pop pop call customer service crying.

Or to directly contact C suite in cases where that's possible.

Why can't people comment without their name being attached? Just spew your opinion on Reddit or Lemmy under a pseudonym.

For instance, my name isn't really Barney Piccolo. I could say anything I want, and my boss could never connect it to my real name.

Well, mine could, because I'm self-employed, but my boss fully agrees with my political positions.

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

"I don't have anything to hide" made it acceptable for social media apps to ask for a video of you holding your photo-id when adding username.

I am not even exagerating facebook apparently wants 3 selfies from certain angles in video format and autodetects fake-sounding usernames.

[-] HakunaHafada@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

To hell with that shit.

Well, they're coming for anonymity as well. The UK identification laws could be used to collect data on theoretically anonymous social media accounts, as it applies to any website that could possibly show a child something "inappropriate", which iirc, includes not just porn but what they consider support for whatever they define as terrorism.

GOP reps have been pushing for similar ID/age checks for a while.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 7 points 1 week ago

Nice try, but I know exactly where Piccolo resides and it's next to the hyperbolic time chamber! I have Dende fire your ass!

Imagine living in a country with free speech

[-] Insekticus@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago

To be fair, I got permabanned on reddit for saying Charlie Kuck deserved what happened to him.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 31 points 1 week ago

This is why you shouldn’t have social media under your real name lol

[-] ohellidk@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

Yeah I'd probably be in a lot of trouble now if I were to. It's kind of ironic, because the right used to bitch and moan about the left "canceling everything and limiting free speech". Who's doing that now?

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 week ago

They always have engaged in cancel culture. But it only bothered them when it was against them.

[-] merc@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

The idea that people ever say anything on the Internet that the whole world can see, and do it in their own name, seems ridiculous to me.

If something is in my real name, it's only for work purposes, like say Linked In. And in that case I'm only ever posting there if I need a job or something.

I wouldn't talk about my favourite sports team, let alone anything political, if it were in my own name.

I am not from USA, upvote and i will say it for you

[-] Busyvar@jlai.lu 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Kirk deserves it

[-] Busyvar@jlai.lu 9 points 1 week ago

Magasphere poisoned public debate far before Kirk's death.

[-] Busyvar@jlai.lu 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Nobody needs to hurt far right, they self-regulate with guns.

[-] Busyvar@jlai.lu 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Crooks and Robinson are just grumpy Reps, but Donald can't ear it.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

eh i'll say it anyway kirk was a weenie

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 26 points 1 week ago

Every dead fascist is a cause for celebration! I hope the next corpse is orange-faced.

[-] Naich@lemmings.world 26 points 1 week ago

I don't care. Fuck Charlie Kirk. If you agree but don't want to be a target of fascists, just upvote this.

[-] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago

FYI upvotes on Lemmy are public.

[-] Naich@lemmings.world 8 points 1 week ago

It's definitely not a trap.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Comment on Kirk all you want. I’ve tried.

There is absolutely no way logic, reason, history, or even the man’s own awful words that will penetrate the thick, fact-resistant, hate-filled skulls of the right. They want blood, they make up completely wild BS about the “violence” of the left, and they don’t want to hear anything about any other shootings that right wingers did.

[-] SunSunFuego@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

my whole company laughed at his death :3

i love yurop

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Surprised they knew who he was

[-] scapegarced@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 week ago

The americans were really quick to tell us

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

It's not that hard to keep your social media separate from your actual identity. I mean, I'm not posting anything they could use against me on my fucking Facebook. And all my other social media doesn't lead to my real identity in any way.

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

I deleted facebook Jan 2025 and scrubbed everything that was there. Same with reddit. I have a tiktok account just so I can watch videos but post nothing.

[-] Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

The woke right is really punching thier own nuts

[-] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Uhhhhhh if you have mainstream social media and are posting on it, I'm sorry but I have no sympathy.

Get off the apps and profit driven social media! It's melting your brain. Plus you are giving money to the absolute worst people ever.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

This is the definition of political violence. The right would never settled for being silenced this way.

[-] FuckFascism@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Rest in piss Charlie Kirk.

[-] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 4 points 1 week ago

!DefundFascism@lemmy.dbzer0.com

We hope you come around Washedupcynic, otherwise your continued compliance is self evident support for fascism.

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

I'm participating in protests outside of work, I write and call federal reps, (because I am not allowed to lobby the state reps I work for, ethics and all,) I donate to wikipedia, ACLU, and other organizations that protect our constitutional rights. I boycott companies that support Trump and right wingers, to the absolute frustration of my household. My, "we can't shop there, we can't buy that product," is met with tons of eye rolling and teeth gnashing. My rebuttal is always, is saving even $1 worth our freedoms? I work for democrats in the state government, so I'm busting my balls doing my job to the best of my ability to support the people on the front line that oppose much of this fascism. I'm doing all I can, but unless someone is willing to step up and pay me a salary and benefits for further activism, I can't leave my job. If I'm going to die for my beliefs, it will be when things devolve enough that our final choice is to take up arms. I don't want to own a gun, but getting to that point means I need the disposable income to purchase one in the first place.
