Why the heck do i have to use another service in order to use Piefed? If Piefed wants to be an actual alternative to reddit, it has to stop with this weirdly unintuitive and unnecesarily complex setup.

[-] wjs018@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

You don't need to use one of these apps. PieFed is perfectly capable of running in a browser, even a mobile browser. Also, you can install PieFed on your phone as a PWA (progressive web application) so that it can be run on your phone exactly like an app.

Some people prefer a different interface though, so these other apps provide options for them. Also, some people are making a transition from lemmy and these apps generally also support lemmy, so it makes the transition easier when the interface stays the same through the transition.

It’s just the app…. you need to use an app to interact with almost all services these days. Maybe you are referring to having choice to be unintuitive? Sure it’s more work and you have to think about what fits most your needs but i think it’s a net benefit to be even have to choice.

I don't get why Piefed isn't an app itself? It's like saying you need and app in order to use Instagram? It doesn't make any sense to me at all. If Piefed wants to be an alternative to Instagram, it needs to be an integrated app - not a service that is depending on running on third party software in order to work.

Not who you responded to.

It's like saying you need and app in order to use Instagram

That's exactly what your Instagram app is: An application to use the Instagram "service". The only difference is that the app is developed by the same people who develop the Instagram service.

it needs to be an integrated app

In some cases, an app is even just another design of the same web page you visit with your browser. The Netflix app you have on your Windows PC is just the web page wrapped in a certain way so that it looks like a program you find on your computer.

That list up there are what you call "integrated apps".

The /c/fediverse mod has been maintaining this wiki page with the same info https://piefed.social/community/fediverse/wiki/piefed-app although this post is more visible, so I've stickied it.

[-] wakest@piefed.social 4 points 2 months ago

thanks! I was just testing them all out and made the list for myself and thought I would share it, I hadn't seen this other wiki list.

[-] Snoopy@piefed.social 4 points 2 months ago

Thank for your post :D

The wiki is still a new sprout, there is lot room for improvements. :)

If you want to edit the wiki, ping me :)

I made a few posts in communities for other Lemmy clients to see if any of them are interested in also supporting Piefed, it might be cool to make a table to track support requests for ones that would be down but haven't started the work yet and would accept PRs

[-] Snoopy@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

Just sent me their links

wiki page

Hold up, piefed has community wiki pages now?

[-] wjs018@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

Yep! Community moderators on piefed can maintain a wiki for their community. The 1.2 release that just came out has a couple improvements to the wiki to help with markdown styling to make it more closely match markdown rendering elsewhere on the site.

oh I didn't see they are supporting piefed now!

[-] wakest@piefed.social 4 points 2 months ago

I see it in the github issues, added!

[-] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 months ago

They have been for a while now.

I'd also like to propose an alternative, and that's installing Piefed as a PWA by creating a shortcut to your phone's homescreen or installing as an app on desktop, at which point it will run like an app.

It works quiet well and has become my primary way of using it. People tend to sleep on PWAs, but they're great. :D

[-] wjs018@piefed.social 11 points 2 months ago

This is my primary way of using piefed. There are a number of improvements for mobile-sized screens coming in the 1.2 update.

[-] rimu@piefed.social 11 points 2 months ago

That's what I do too. It has all the latest PieFed-specific features and consumes basically no space on my phone.

[-] ThorrJo@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 months ago

Hrm, I wonder if I can do that with Akkoma 🤔

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago

Thunder I believe won't support PieFed until the next update. The current version that I see in the Play Store was last updated in June 26, 2025 and does not mention PieFed.

You can download a version with that functionality (I've heard, though I do not recall where), but that is not the version 0.73 that is currently in the Play Store.

So you may want to annotate it as coming soon rather than fully here already.

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The beta version on IOS testflight already has piefed support. It doesn’t support all features yet, but general functionality (posting, commenting, etc.) already works.

[-] wakest@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

I am using the beta on android too and its working really well, surprised how much already works perfectly...

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

That's great but if someone were to click your download link, I don't see a version that supports PieFed, so I was trying to help avoid confusion by mentioning that so it could hopefully be clarified.

[-] wakest@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

Ok I'll change the link to go to just the beta version

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

Sounds great! 👍

[-] moseschrute@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Thanks for including Blorp. Blorp can also be downloaded on:

If you pick either Google Play Beta or TestFlight, you can provide direct feedback to me via our Matrix group (https://matrix.to/#/#blorp:matrix.org). Even if you don't join beta, feel free to join Matrix.

Blorp will support PieFed flairs very soon. You can preview what flairs will look like below:

[-] atomicpoet@piefed.social 8 points 2 months ago

At least where I live, Blorp is on the App Store.

I think the only country missing is France. But I think I can actually update the app listing to include France.

[-] mesamunefire@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

Everyone knows the best way to view piefed is links2 ;)

Awesome list!

[-] wakest@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

Can you post a picture of what it looks like in links2

[-] end0fline@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

I guess this would be an OK place to ask since I couldn’t find an update anywhere else. Did the creator stop working on the Piefed compatible version of Interstellar? It’s not in the iOS App Store and the Test Flight version no longer works.

[-] Blaze@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago
[-] jwr1@kbin.earth 7 points 2 months ago

Intestellar is still compatible with PieFed and will have some updates in the next release. The release itself has taken a while, but is planned to be released hopefully next week. The reason the test flight no longer works is that they have a 90-day expiration on each release.

[-] end0fline@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

Good to know! Thanks for the update.
