Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has ordered his attorneys to conduct a review of Smithsonian museums, calling their portrayal of U.S. history too negative and focused too much on “how bad Slavery was.”

Trump said he would subject the museums to “the exact same process” his administration has conducted of universities, with the goal of making the Smithsonian less “woke.”

I look forward to the Smithsonian exhibit explaining how bad the trump regime was.

[-] mcv@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Atop being so negative about slavery, because we want to bring it back.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 119 points 2 days ago

Trump has literally zero empathy and no morals, and probably thinks it was good for the economy and the slave owners, so it wasn't that bad.
One would have hoped Americans are learning a lesson now, but apparently most of the Trump supporters are not. On the contrary they are absolutely fine with it. Sometimes even when their own families are hit by Trump policies, they still say they support him?!
Half Americans are in a brainwashed cult, and the other half is in danger of slowly going crazy too, due to the insanity that USA is now.

Ironically, slavery hurt the south economically

[-] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

It made them a single-industry agricultural economy, which only works so long as people want what you're growing. When cotton was new, and fresh, and cool, it worked great for them! When the world started transitioning to a industrial manufacturing/global trade economy, it became a lot less valuable and lot less productive, as machines could do more, cheaper.

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 13 points 2 days ago

Not to mention that the old plantation owners made absolute bank from share cropping after the slaves were liberated. Their economy was actually hampered by slavery, but it was worth it to them since they could futher entrench their racial hierarchy.

Slavery is a terrible idea, who knew

Turns out an educated, happy, and productive populace is far more beneficial

It's not half. It's less than a third of Americans that support him.

Nearly 37% of Americans didn't vote in the last election, which is arguably worse...

We've been screaming "freedom isn't free" at one another for over a century, and yet that many of us don't care enough to vote.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The only reliable poll is the election, and at the election Trump got just above half the votes.
Every attempt at claiming half the population doesn't support Trump is just green washing the numbers IMO.

It could also be said to be more than two thirds, since everybody that didn't vote, didn't do anything to prevent him from winning.

Saying it's just a third is naive.

See the new Florida standards:

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-florida-standards-teach-black-people-benefited-slavery-taught-usef-rcna95418

"The Florida State Board of Education’s new standards includes controversial language about how “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,” according to a 216-page document about the state’s 2023 standards in social studies, posted by the Florida Department of Education."

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Yes they should actually thank us for taking them out of freedom into slavery. /s

It's like when back in Europe some medieval explorers asked the Catholic church if it was immoral to kill the natives in South America, and the conclusion by the church was that it must be OK because it was Gods will, since he had given the white man such superior weapons.

Release the Epstein files and put them in the Smithsonian!

[-] iThinkDifferentThanU@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago

They won't release them because the kompromat is a currency that loses its value when exposed.

It's not just that they're hiding the people involved, it's that it's currently being used to blackmail people.

I mean, they should release them. I'm just saying there's even more bad stuff they're doing, on top of it all.

time to cull the wealthy, fuck em and those that stand with them, swing them all from a noose

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think it’s time to confiscate their wealth and start their public trials against humanity. I think there will be some examples made

let's do this shit!

[-] madjo@feddit.nl 56 points 2 days ago

Wow, that's wild, where are the Epstein files?

The translation of "woke" is anything I dont like or understand

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

Actually, this is woke - i.e. the seeking out and understanding of systemic oppression in the past, present, and future. Specifically, it originated in regards to being aware of the oppression of African Americans, so this is about as woke as it gets.

Being woke isn't a bad thing, at least not for anyone with a brain and a heart. In this case, the slave filled past of the US is essential history to anyone trying to understand how the country got where it is, and how to address it for the future. And that's why it's become a target. That's why the bigots of the country and world have worked so hard (and have largly succeeded) in turning the word and concept into a pejorative. Don't let them. Stay woke.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 7 points 2 days ago

Nobody ever talks about the upsides!

[-] metoosalem@feddit.org 35 points 2 days ago

Sure Donny, let’s focus on the Epstein files instead!

Here’s a “fun” exercise: choose your state and decide for yourself how negative we should be when describing chattel slavery!

They laid peoples 'cross barrels and whupped 'em wid bull whups till the blood come. They'd half feed 'em and removeds'd steal food and cook all night. The things we was forced to do then the whites is doing of their own free will now. You gotta reap jest what you sow 'cause the Good Book says it.

They used to bid n!ggers off and then load 'em on wagons and take 'em to cotton farms to work. I never seen no cotton till I come heah. Peoples make big miration 'bout girls having babies at 11 years old. And you better have them whitefolks some babies iffen you didn't wanta be sold. Though a funny thing to me is, iffen a n!gger woman had a baby on the boat on the way to the cotton farms, they throwed it in the river. Taking 'em to them cotton farms is jest the reason removeds is so plentiful in the South today.

I ain't got no education a'tall. In dem days you better not be caught with a newspaper, else you got a beating and your back almost cut off. When n!ggers got free, whitefolks killed 'em by the carload, 'cause they said it was a removed uprising. I used to lay on the flo' with the whitefolks and hear 'em pass. Them patrollers roved trying to ketch n!ggers without passes to whup 'em. They was sometimes called bush whackers.

I’m sure about the time he gets Hugo Boss to design the new ICE SS uniforms he’ll be telling everyone how the little guy with the tiny mustache was just misunderstood and his stormtroopers were great for the German economy.

[-] pupbiru@aussie.zone 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

hugo boss? na they’ll just be gold polo shirts and golf shoes … and don’t forget a mandatory MAGA cap - no discount

[-] Saik0Shinigami@lemmy.saik0.com 5 points 2 days ago

I’m sure about the time he gets Hugo Boss to design the new ICE SS uniforms

They only manufactured, not created the design.

For whatever that's worth.

[-] CentauriBeau@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

TIL, thanks. But it doesn’t really change how screwed we are currently.

[-] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

I would take this opportunity to create a new installment titled "the benefits of slavery", devoting an entire wing to it, and keeping it completely empty.

[-] Darleys_Brew@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 days ago

He’s going to make everyone slaves this time, not just black people.

The whole world needs to be very afraid.

[-] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

In other news, corpulent, spray-tanned rapist half-wit wakes at 0700 and immediately starts shooting his mouth off (again).

I hope he gets reincarnated as a slave girl on Thomas Jefferson's plantation.
The sooner the better.

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 7 points 2 days ago

Admittedly, I don't fully understand how reincarnation is supposed to work... But does it involve time travel?

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Some interpretations of reincarnation posit that every person that has ever and will ever exist is the actually same being living through a mortal life over and over again. In that system, "time travel" (if you view it that way) would be essential.

Kurzgesagt did a nice video on the concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6fcK_fRYaI

Time is just a fourth dimension we can only move one direction in, in this form.
There are (fictional) stories, like "The Egg" for example, in which God or a god can reincarnate you as anyone in any time.
In "The Egg" by Andy weir a man is killed in a car accident and reincarnated as a Chinese peasant girl in the 16th century.

What a dumb motherfucker. I am constantly, relentlessly embarrassed by our Mad King. Where are the Epstein Files!?

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Has Taco Camacho even shuffled through the Smithsonian museums?

My memory of them is that they are huge.

Also, I wonder if they even truly address slavery's awfulness. I have a feeling that snowflakes are just upset they mention it at all...

[-] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 10 points 2 days ago

Is he going to hire Uncle Ruckus to design it? Maybe Clarence Thomas?

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

Sounds like it's all going according to plan.

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Yeah! They should look at the bright side. I mean, unemployment among slaves was nearly zero, right?

It was far worse than you could ever imagine or place in a Museum.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 days ago

How many times does the right have to tell us that slavery was good before we just accept it? I dunno, but they aim to find out.
