Fucking good. What's the point of a union if the government is just gonna force everyone back to work?

Everyone knows that corporations never negotiate in good faith. You can't just force the workers to accept terms they don't agree with.

100% the return to work order has nothing to do with national security or the union not arguing on good faith. The Canadian government wants money. That's it. US airtraffic controls need to take notice. Remember people, if your government gives you a unlawful order you don't have to follow it because, you are the government. Collectively we make up our governments. That's how governments work. Yes there may be some short term pain (layoffs, fines, imprisonment, etc.) but the long term pain is greater if you don't stand up for what's right.

For sure. Biden broke the railroad workers strike and was a "pro-labor" president. If a strike doesn't make business sweat, labor has no cards.

I don't agree with what Joe Biden did there.

But you have to keep in mind the country he is running. Americans are very hostile to unions. A massive strike railroad strike shutting down the US economy would have ENRAGED your average american.

But overall, he was an extremely pro-union President:

His administration bailed out union pension plans:

Joe Biden called Congress to vote the PRO-Act, a bill punishing corporations targeting labor unions :

(Republicans and a few conservatives democrats refused to vote the Pro-Act)

The Biden FTC banned employee non-compete clauses:

This was a huge win for american workers.

Guess what happened next. The non-compete ban was overturned by Ada Brown. She is a Republican Judge that was appointed by Trump:

Well yeah, if your average person doesn't feel the sting when your labor is absent, how else can you guarantee majority support? To paraphrase a wise man, when you forget that things need to be built you are at risk of inheriting a system you rely on without gratitude.

[-] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago

I don’t give a shit about that. He lost his pro union status because of the railroad escapade. That is what the country needed to push the revolution it deserved and he squashed it and let corporate America win and now we have what we have. Fuck Joe Biden

Feels like a decade, dang. Who can keep track.

Anyway...

I don't know any of the particulars but what if the union advised it's workers to only do the paid work? I don't see how they can be held to account for not doing unpaid work if they all refuse together.

[-] ryan213@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 days ago

The sticking point in their negotiations is just that - they don't get paid for the work they do when the plane is not in the air.

[-] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

I think theyre saying just dont do that work.

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 2 days ago

But they literally can't. Have you seen the average person try to put their suitcase in the overhead bin? Completely ignoring the sign that is plastered on the door and the back to put it on its side?

Have you seen the average person try to find their seat, swearing up and down that they purchased extra leg room only to be really seated next to the lavatory?

The plane would never take off.

Flight crew should be paid the moment they cross security. At that point they've badged in and they should be considered to be at work.

[-] Rozauhtuno 7 points 1 day ago

The plane would never take off.

If planes can't take off without this essential work, then the people doing it need to be compensated for it.

Otherwise the plane can stay on the fucking ground.

[-] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

This would effectively stop the flights yes, thats the point. It shows the labor their doing is necessary, and theyre the only ones who can do it. So they should be paid becuase thats what a fucking job is.

[-] knightly@pawb.social 5 points 1 day ago

Counterpoint, everyone doing hourly work should be paid starting the moment they begin their commute, plus half an hour of prep time.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

They do pre boarding outside the plane. They can't even load the plane if no one does that.

[-] osaerisxero@kbin.melroy.org 12 points 2 days ago

I do belive that will demonstrate the point

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Exactly, the planes will never take off.
