Oh man I wanna drive a BYD dolphin so bad…!

Test drove one with my partner, can't say it was impressive. The salesman repeatedly pointed out the moderm feature of an inbuilt dashcam. We patiently listened but im thinking 'like it's ok dude I've seen a dashcam before'.

Panels were really thin, noticed where the bonnet marries up to the front of the car has two triangle wedges to make it fit neatly - no support under them, metal panel flexed with a gentle prod of my finger. Opening the doors showed a gap between body exterior panel and interior panel - instead of stamped & joined as one piece, loose bit of molded foam silicone filling the gap.. plastic smell inside the car was pretty strong, moreso than other new cars I've test driven. These are just the things i remember, we found a lot of issues that just dont exist on a more experienced manufacturer in a similar price range.

Odd style choices I can overlook, but yeah everything about it was made on a paper-thin budget with corners cut everywhere (that are not so easy to notice unless you know what you're looking for), which does not inspire trust in longevity. Time will tell but I think these early BYD models will be rust magnets with the lack of attention shown to details.

If you need higher build quality there are other options out there. There have always been cheap, questionably built ICE cars for people who just need a vehicle, let's allow the same for EVs

Yeah … can you say Yugo or a Tata Nano. Had a friend who owned a Hugo in high school in the mid to late 80s. It was like an aluminum foil wrapped golf cart.

Only if there’s also readily available BYD Dolphin repair parts, for me….

It's about the Chinese counter-tariffs on canola.

Yeah, Alberta produces a lot of canola. I'm honestly still surprised that the farming lobby beat out the oil lobby, though. She really does need those rural votes, I suppose.

Definitely the most unexpected Canadian news of all time.

Perfect timing. I wonder how this might conflict with Poilievre as he’s drawing plans to campaign against EV mandates pending his byelection results.
