I don't know why clothes that have sat around for a long time get funky but I don't think it's dust per se. Keeping clothes in a drawer generally keeps dust off of them but they still get funky.

but they still get funky.

If they do you might have high humidity. Depending on the climate you live in better ventilation might help.

I live in a desert and clothes, linens, etc. still get that funky smell if they've been in the closet for a while.

Yeah, it’s residual body oils and laundry soap going rancid. Humans are gross.

Soaps and oils and no airflow. Hang cloths out of the closet the day before you wear (or rewear) them. Hang outside not in direct sunlight works even better.

And to original OP, any dust added that day will shake off.

The closet will to a point, but unless the closet is airtight, dust will seep in .

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Plus opening and closing the closet will let dust in, so the more it is accessed the more dust will get in.

But still far less than outside the closet.

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 16 points 1 week ago

It gets there too, but not as much. The dust comes from outside the closet, not inside.

There's dust in closets, too. I just bought a 3-pack of zippable plastic dust covers for all the hanging clothes I don't wear often because they were getting dusty AF.

[-] JASN_DE@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago

There will be dust in there too, just not as much as leaving them out.

your skin will accumulate and form all that gray dust on surfaces, combined with dust mites, or other allergen materials.
