The time skip feels natural, and even though I was initially skeptical about the premise that Hank and Peggy moved to Saudi Arabia for years (seems so out of character for them), I now appreciate how it allows us to see the Hills react to the ways life in the US has changed. It was a great choice.

I’m struggling with Dale’s voice because neither voice actor sounds like him.

I am too... It's really distracting. The original voice actor nailed the right voice for the character.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

But he seemed to have forgotten the voice.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

Oh wait, are the first few episodes him? Whoa, I guess he either did forget or aging did a number on him.

Maybe my headcanon can be that the years of smoking caught up with Dale.

Apparently it was the original voice actor Johnny Hardwick on the first three episodes and episodes five to seven.

That's perfect. It's now my headcanon too.

I love how Peggy now thinks she “picked up” perfect Arabic while living in Saud-eye Arabia

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

It's so in character, lol

Hats yeah, and the Taxi driver can't understand her.

Dales voice is really bad but completely understandable.

Kahn's voice sucks too... but again we know why.

I was very pessimistic about the whole thing going in but the show won me over fast. I loved the scene "It's nice to be nice" captured what Hank is about quick.

I wish they had kept the original Kahn voice actor. It must feel awful to lose your character like that, and I'm very much in the camp of not restricting voice actors' range.

And yeah, that scene was good. I was genuinely feeling sad along with Hank and Peggy in that parking lot, in a "you can never go home again" sort of nostalgic way. I like that it felt like a commentary about real life and rebooting a beloved show at the same time.

Toby Huss should've kept acting as Kahn. I'm of the opinion the best VA is the one that best fits the character. If they really wanted an Asian VA then why stop at just Asian? They should've specifically chosen a Laotian to do the part for real correctness.

[-] Auntievenim@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Wait the guy doing Kahn now isnt laotian? This is an outrage!

WHAT ocean?!

[-] Thunderbird4@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Ronnie Chieng could have at least tried to sound recognizably like Khan. Surely there was a way to lose the stereotype without losing the high-pitched, high-strung sound.

[-] cubism_pitta@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think I get to have much opinion on this.

I can say that King of the Hill is why I know ANYTHING about Laotian culture.

I do wish Dale sounded less brain dead though :( BUT I think picking a veteran voice actor for him is more respectful than having a new comer portray him

Re: Dale… You can’t replace perfection, I suppose.

[-] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Went in cautiously optimistic, but I was pleasantly surprised! My face hurt from smiling at one point and laughed hard a few times. It was hard hearing Johnny struggle pulling off Dale's voice though :,(... Also Kahn's was too iconic, and since the show has lost so many people at this point I wish they didn't change va's. Over all I liked the season, might need to rewatch as I had it on as a bit of background.

Looking at you Gumball.

That's a relief. I've been so worried it'll crash and burn given the state of reboots. If they got it right, it's great timing for the commentary. And honestly I feel like it would have flopped if it hadn't delayed through the pandemic.

[-] 58008@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Great series/season. The different voice actors were quite noticeable but after a few eps you accept it. I can't think of any other criticisms, and even that's not really a 'criticism'.

[-] JoeyJoeJoeJr@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 weeks ago

Ronny Chieng absolutely sucked as Kahn. Toby Huss (original voice of Kahn) did an admirable impression of Johnny Hardwick's Dale - just sounded maybe a little congested or something.

I never really watched the original series, since it's a boring offshoot of Beavis and Butthead, but I love little moments of it. Great characters, kind of boring stories.

It feels like a less wholesome, animated version of Joe Pera.
