Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Americanisation of our society, where people know more about the Constitution of the United States than they do about the Canadian Constitution.

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca 33 points 1 year ago

The funny thing is that this wouldn't be a free speech issue in the US either. The WestJet union isn't the government.

[-] Splitdipless@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

...and even if it were the USA government, they don't need to provide you with the PA for you to have your rights.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That doesn't seem to matter to the right wing snowflakes.

Any time someone tells then to STFU, they always try to claim their freedom of speech is being violated.

They either don't know or don't care what that term actually means.

A battle over who should apologize to who doesn't sound American at all.

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

In America they say the other side should apologize

In Canada they say they are the ones to apologize

[-] introversion@universeodon.com 1 points 1 year ago

@Rocket @Mereo Unless the apology is demanded by us, with guns drawn? —American speaking

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca 48 points 1 year ago

Your free speech rights don't apply to making political speeches on WestJet airplains you tool.

He's flying high .... high on freedom

None of what these right wing tools have to say needs to make any sense. Ever. They run on faith, belief and fantasies, and they can change anytime, anyhow, anywhere.

It's the same as Christian religion ... it's an evolving idea where you cherry pick the good parts, mash it together, create a catch phrase and talk with authority ... and the people will follow you long enough for them not to realize before it's all too late.

“And I think it’s because people who work on airplanes, people who work in restaurants, people who work building things love my message.”

What a load of shit. He's even starting to sound like Trump.

[-] tarsn@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately he's not wrong, I'm a union construction worker and my coworkers love him. But really they'd love anyone flying the Conservative banner.

[-] folkrav@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

It's utterly insane how all it takes to get somebody to vote against their self-interests is to rile them up and tell them what they want to hear. Poilievre's program has literally nothing to offer to your average middle-class Joe. Literally nothing. His whole platform is populist BS and your usual rich-get-richer conservative policies.

[-] tarsn@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Your average blue collar worker is the high school jock/bully that never amounted to anything else in life. They just want to be told it's ok to call people gay slurs, hate anything to do with trans people, and look funny at anyone whose skin color is different than their own even if they deny that in public.

Oh and any conflict should be resolved with violence of course

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

all it takes to get somebody to vote against their self-interests is to rile them up and tell them what they want to hear.

Thats populism in a nutshell.

[-] Powerpoint@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago

That's disappointing to hear. Anyone in a union should be aware that Conservatives are the enemy of the working class and will do anything to keep workers wages/rights suppressed.

[-] Rocket@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Anyone in a union should be aware that Conservatives are the enemy of the working class

What are some detrimental-to-labour actions the CPC has carried out in the past that anyone in a union should be aware of?

Labour is mostly a provincial concern, so the average person isn't apt to see them as being impactful to labour. Your list will serve as a good, concrete reminder.

[-] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Not like the liberals are any different.

[-] Splitdipless@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

You're not entirely wrong. They will fight for workers as long as they work for the companies run by their friends, like SNC Lavalin.

Don't forget NDP exists as an option.

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 year ago

"Man who has never worked a real job in his life and who will retire with a fat pension and full benefits thinks he's the leader for the working man."

[-] MyFeetOwnMySoul@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure he knows the difference. It's hard to score political points with the truth

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

So he's appealing to ignorant people for votes?

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

Polling 41% would suggest it’s been working so I’m not sure why he would stop

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

There are lots of ignorant one issue voters.

[-] MyFeetOwnMySoul@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Most people are some combination of Ignorant and apathetic, so a politician (of any stripe) usually has more luck saying something snappy and quotable rather than making some long thoughtful nuanced remark.

[-] AnthoNightShift@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

Doesn't understand or doesn't care???

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago

Both are concerning in a potential leader of the country.

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 year ago

He's selling lies to influence the ignorant to vote against their own self-interest. He's a conservative.
