That's a white elephant gift.

If he's still around, maintenance on that thing isn't gonna be affordable

Russia, if you're listening...

Plot twist: he’s not leaving office. Don’t tell me about the 22nd amendment. He’s already in office in violation of the 14th. He’s not dying anytime soon either. Rotten fucks like him always live well into their 90s, fueled by hate. Just look at Rupert Murdoch.

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 24 points 13 hours ago

Murdoch's age is just insane. His fucking father was a stain on humanity during fucking WWI, and that dude was already in his 30s at the time.

[-] r_deckard@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago

I'm curious to know who is going to pay to keep it airworthy, if DT does leave office? Those things aren't cheap to maintain.

If he leaves office he won't be in a position to grant political favours to friends.

[-] Furbag@lemmy.world 15 points 13 hours ago

His Trumpcoin scam is one rugpull away from being converted to actual useful money.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 60 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

I guess it's encouraging that they think he'll ever be leaving office alive.

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

Did anyone say alive?

Trump Pyramid where he gets buried with his jet...

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 17 hours ago

Or they know the opposite and allow it because of that

The funny thing is that Christians always say "you can't take it with you when you die", so maybe they made a deal with god to get an exception?

[-] nao@sh.itjust.works 78 points 19 hours ago

Even if the plane itself was "free", they are voting to make a $1B gift (the cost to retrofit the plane) from tax money to one guy personally?

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

Today's word is corruption!

[-] crusa187@lemmy.ml 28 points 17 hours ago

Have to pay for this instead of healthcare or housing. Land of the free!

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

These guys would allow tax-paid literal harem for Taco if Taco demanded it from these cucks.

[-] snf@lemmy.world 26 points 17 hours ago

"Emolument"? You sound gay and your shit's all retarded

[-] CPMSP@midwest.social 12 points 17 hours ago

Don't worry scrote! My ex wife's tarded too and she's living a kickass life!

[-] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 119 points 22 hours ago

Well, he's never going to leave the Oval Office at the end of this term, so the point is kind of moot.

[-] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 20 hours ago

Or make it there at all. The pope was just a warm up. Vance wants that oval office couch.

Give it to the Air Force so they can test out a few missiles on it.

Preferably with Trump still inside it.

...this evening.

[-] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 85 points 22 hours ago

isn't any gift received by the president property of the government? or so i gathered from watching the west wing 😆

[-] TomMasz@lemmy.world 100 points 22 hours ago

That's how it used to work.

[-] DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 11 hours ago

Haha, laws, those were the days

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 59 points 22 hours ago

So much of our government worked on the idea that nobody would be brazen enough to break convention, and the untested belief that voters would immediately and vehemently reject anyone trying to openly abuse their power.

We now know both of those assumptions were wrong.

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 19 points 20 hours ago

The country was formed when there were like 2 million people in it. We should have thrown everything out and rewritten it decades if not centuries ago.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 22 points 19 hours ago

That was actually the explicit plan, per Thomas Jefferson.

It was gifted to his presidential library. So no. Only Trump can use it. Pretty fucked up huh?

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 39 points 22 hours ago

But it's going to cost around 1 billion to renovate by our tax dollars.

Hey Doge! I think you can cut some waste right here!

[-] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago

That's the part that doesn't make sense to me. It's either a gift to him, and it's his problem to take care of, or a gift to the government, and their problem.

When you get elected president your car(s) doesn't suddenly get overhauled with bullet proof glass and security features paid for by the government. You hop in a government provided vehicle, and when you leave (outside of specific instances and time frames) you hop back in your normal car and live your life. Sure the secret service is around for things, but George Bush buys a truck from dealership, it doesn't get taken to a military installation and reworked with our taxes.

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago

This is a really good case for sabotaging the retrofit. Slow it wwwwaaaaaayyyyy doooowwwnnn, and do all the merely cosmetic tacky gilt stuff first. Once he retires, the protective shielding and communications and weaponry won't be necessary anymore. And he won't care, as long as it looks lavish enough.

Also I think we really need to start using "retires" rather than "leaves office." Or "goes private" if it seems like he doesn't want to feel old enough for retirement. We have to make it seem like something he'd want. If we really made it appealing he'd quit early, because he's sure the fuck not doing this job for the sake of the nation.

Emoluments clause? No? Anyone? Anyone?

[-] spongebue@lemmy.world 24 points 18 hours ago

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.

Technically that right there would make it ok if the house passes the same. But my God, if we're going to use that qualifier to let the president have something from a foreign state did it have to be a fucking 747?

[-] AmidFuror@fedia.io 28 points 21 hours ago

Went out the window in 2017.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago

Are there not laws that determine gifts and compensation for the President that would be broken here? And if not, why not?

[-] GlendatheGayWitch@lemmy.world 9 points 13 hours ago

The people who write the laws are saying they are OK with this. The law doesn't mean much when the corrupt have the pen and paper.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

A lot of what Trump does that he shouldn't be able to, he'd be able to if congress said OK.

The fact they even bothered to say OK here is kind of surprising given they haven't bothered on other things and just let him do it anyway.

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Lol "laws".

[-] tonytins@pawb.social 27 points 21 hours ago

Trump is the king of leeching off the government. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

[-] griff@lemmings.world 7 points 21 hours ago

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 26 points 22 hours ago

No one could have seen this coming. We’re such a clown show.

Banana republic

A banana republic is a country with an economy of state capitalism, where the country is operated as a private commercial enterprise for the exclusive profit of the ruling class. Typically, a banana republic has a society of extremely stratified social classes, usually a large impoverished working class and a ruling class plutocracy, composed of the business, political, and military elites. The ruling class controls the primary sector of the economy by exploiting labor.

It’s hard to believe the US has come to this. Fucking crazy.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 6 points 17 hours ago

Lol, they're pretending he'll leave office

[-] LadyMeow 14 points 21 hours ago

Lmao. Hey, republican voters? Are you watching? How much longer can you hold out? He is a crook, lied to you and is now destroying the country. Wake tf up.

[-] aramis87@fedia.io 13 points 21 hours ago

They should force him to repay the money being spent to renovate the plane.

[-] xzot746@sh.itjust.works 9 points 21 hours ago

Is there really a more corrupt country in the world, we know Russia, Ukraine used to be (maybe still is ), and I'm sure many others that we think it believe to be corrupt, but when really looking at what is going in in America I think they top the cake. Yeah I'm sure they spin it so it has a justified reason but I think that's all smoke and mirrors.

They need to be added to some type of list.

[-] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 10 points 22 hours ago

It's a money pit.

What he should do is SAY he spent the money on the airplane but REALLY put the money in his back pocket.
