Seriously. It doesn’t matter how people identify, they’re all people. And people right now are beaten, broken, and poor.
Ideally it wouldn't matter. But when people are treated badly because they are not white or not cisgender or not straight, identity becomes a necessary and important tool for unity and resistance. Identity is a political thing.
But it shouldn’t be, and that’s an issue. It doesn’t matter what color someone is, who they fuck, or what God they follow. It doesn’t matter if they’re disabled physically or mentally. Everyone deserves exactly what they need to be on a level playing field with everyone else. Everyone deserves safety, security, and everything they need to survive. Right now, PEOPLE are struggling. Yes, because others choose to degrade them for whatever reason, and we should focus on that, not what they’re being degraded for. Focus on the bullies, not the kind of people they punch. Tolerance of intolerance breeds intolerance.

I think if you're being persecuted daily for being trans, for example, it's going to be important to you to call out those who attack trans people, and to stick together with other trans people to fight for your rights. Your identity as a trans person is important because it's their pretext for oppressing you and it's your solidarity as a community in fighting that oppression you experience together. Sure, in a sense it's quite right to say "hey, in the end we're all just people and we should get past all this identity stuff." But in reality the only people for whom that move is available in a political context are those with the luxury of not being oppressed for who they are.
How do we get there if we don't learn the ways in which someone might be disadvantaged in current society? Because yeah, it shouldn't matter, but also, societal inequality is different for me as a trans person than it is for a disabled person, and the well wishing that everyone just magically get what they need without understanding people's identities is just kicking the can down the line.
They only talk about identity because they don't want to talk about kitchen table issues
The flip side is that they also lose votes if they don't fight all the bathroom bill type nonsense that republicans keep coming up with.
Right. It's not as if there isn't another side working purposefully and knowingly at times to hurt those they've chosen to single out. And then on top of it those same people will mischaracterize the whole situation so as not to see how wrong they are, demeaning anyone who identifies or cares. Remaining silent is also not the answer.
I agree. Same with gun control. Im for it but I want emphasis on healthcare, education, regulation, fair progressive taxation, government services as part of a modern, functioning society. We lose these things and good luck on the rest. Moreso with foreign affairs.
Respectfully disagree on gun control. In the past few years we've seen things like constitutional carry, legalized bump stocks, legalized sawed-off shotguns, teachers carrying while on the job, gun-buyback bans, stand-your-ground laws being unequally applied to minorities, and probably a slew of other things I don't know about. The problem, as usual, is the messaging. The GOP has been talking about gun confiscation for decades and it hasn't happened anywhere. They talk about a "mental health crisis" but do basically nothing about that and even make it worse (pretty sure TX also is making it harder to confiscate an individuals guns for "red flags").
The Democrats need to come hard with the facts. Guns are trafficked into blue states from red states, guns kill more kids than swimming pools or car crashes or fentanyl, buying a gun is easier than buying a car, turning 18 doesn't make you responsible enough to handle military-grade weapons, AR-15s are not good home defense weapons, home invasions are incredibly rare and mostly happen because the perp thinks nobody is home.
Im not saying throw it out. Im saying if you don't have education, healthcare, etc that its basically a side issue at that point because everything is so bad. We are waaaayyyy behind. Its like working on airbags when you don't have seatbelts.
