Authorities in at least three states have arrested individuals allegedly impersonating Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at a time when real ICE agents have ramped up immigration enforcement efforts under the Trump administration, adding to existing fears of law enforcement among migrant communities.

You know what I bet would help? If actual ICE agents showed their faces and IDs and had warrants instead of just jumping out of a rental F150 in masks and tactical paintball gear and grabbing people's babies and punching old people. Just a thought.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 32 points 6 days ago

You're obviously a far left radical! What radical ideas are you going to demand next? Due process and the rule of law? Preposterous!

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 18 points 6 days ago

And if they only went after violent criminals in their territory, instead of being such cowards they'd rather grab law-abiding people at hospitals and schools and churches.

[-] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 8 points 6 days ago

Hey, be compassionate. You at least should understand that they need to show big and beautiful numbers to impress the genius man with strategic thinking. It's hard to do if you come after the actual criminals

[-] meowMix2525@lemm.ee 2 points 6 days ago

Were you under any illusion that when they said one they didn't mean the other?

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

It came out of Trump's mouth, ergo it was a lie.

And the masked gang conducting the abductions are obviously a pusillanimous pack of bullies.

Meanwhile, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Carl Thomas Bennett was arrested for allegedly impersonating an ICE officer and sexual assaulting a woman at a Motel 6 threatening to deport her if she didn’t comply, according to CNN affiliate WRAL.

Police reports indicated that Bennett, 37, “threatened to deport the victim if she did not have sex with him,” and “displayed a business card with a badge on it,” according to WRAL.

Ah, rape.

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 35 points 6 days ago

See, that's what got him caught.

He showed some form of identification, even if fake. The real ICE would never do that.

They may have done the other stuff but we probably wouldn't know.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Ah, rape.

The president is a rapist, so why not? It could get you a segment on Fox.

[-] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago

The president is a rapist,

And felon. This guy is going places!

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 89 points 6 days ago

You can't impersonate an officer when officers are doing everything in their power to not be recognized as officers. No face, name tag, department, badge, uniform, warrant, marked government vehicle, standard issue side arm, etc. If no one is a cop then everyone can pretend to be a cop.

[-] hexonxonx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 days ago

Like Iranian gun teams. They'll be able to move around fully armed and in the open for a looooooooooong time thanks to ICE. America is so fucked.

[-] Marthirial@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Correct. Cosplaying Gestapo thugs is not a crime.

[-] Wilco@lemm.ee 48 points 6 days ago

Wait, you mean criminals are impersonating the guys that look and act like criminals? How odd.

[-] TheObviousSolution@lemm.ee 18 points 6 days ago

Don't people realize that ICE are the people with masks that don't have to identify themselves or provide a reason why you should comply and that criminals are the people with masks that don't have to identify themselves or provide a reason why you should comply? Come on, sheeple.

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 69 points 6 days ago

Who could have forseen this could happen?

[-] Owlboi@lemm.ee 49 points 6 days ago

genuinely, if i was american, i'd make sure to get a license to carry just in case this ever happened to me. anyone not identifying themselves trying to stuff me in an umarked vehicle is a kidnapper and will be treated as such.

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago

What if these fake ICE officers identified themselves as ICE though? At what point does your identification become truth? The official ICE gestapo already doesn't have to fully identify themselves.

[-] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 days ago

So you’ll be charged with resisting arrest and uttering threats. So even if you’re innocent of the initial immigration charges you still get a felony arrest.

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 48 points 6 days ago

They are sending people straight to off shore black sites. If you wanna go to El Salvador or Guantanamo Bay, be my guest, but i have no plan on being sent anywhere.

[-] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago

My point was you can’t win. They’ll fuck you either way

[-] dontbelievethis@sh.itjust.works 26 points 6 days ago

And their point is that if you fucked either way it doesn't matter anymore what you do.

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago

Well then I'm taking a few of them with me!

[-] Sarmyth@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago

You're already being kidnapped and potentially sent to an out of country prison with no hearing. There is no downside under these parameters.

[-] Owlboi@lemm.ee 5 points 6 days ago

actually, legally speaking you are 100% in the right for defending yourself from kidnappings. any officer is required by law to identify themselves, and seeing as they didnt, thats on them.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Yup. I'm shooting anyone in the face who tries to abduct me without properly identifying themselves. I'll deal with the repercussions after I potentially save myself from being human trafficked or having my organs harvested.

[-] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

The problem is you might not get the chance to make such a defense in a courtroom. If it is an actual ICE agent, they will just disappear you.

[-] witheyeandclaw@lemmy.sdf.org 33 points 6 days ago

"Johnson was charged with three counts of kidnapping and one count each of impersonating a law enforcement officer, petty larceny, assault and battery, according to jail records."

This is what cop behavior is legally described as when you aren't a cop.

Fucking excellent.

Well, not the crime and the general scumbaggery, but the more this happens the more justified you’ll be gunning down a random person claiming to be law enforcement as they attempt to illegally detain people. Every time an ice agent dies an angel gets its wings - if it’s from a legally defensible bullet from a patriot they get to cum too.

Do your part assholes.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 21 points 6 days ago

To me it sounds more like the cops are impersonating civilians.

[-] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 13 points 6 days ago

Criminals are impersonating other criminals who are under the power of a criminal

Criminalception!!

[-] magnetosphere@fedia.io 27 points 6 days ago

The obvious answer is to beat the crap out of anyone who claims to be an ICE officer.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Run them out of your community like they're fascists. Because they are.

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

authorities issue national warning

Instead of just stopping the behavior that makes this even possible lol

[-] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

There's an extremely simple solution to this problem

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Yeah, shoot anyone in the face that tries to abduct you without proper identification.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 18 points 6 days ago

Everyone should just dress up like ICE everywhere ... you don't have to do anything violent or illegal .. just go about your day as an ICE agent.

Going shopping, dress up like ICE ... anyone asks, just say you're ICE

Going to the movies? dress up like ICE

Going to visit grandma? dress up like ICE

Going to a wedding? dress up like ICE with a hoodie, ball cap, sunglasses and mask

Once everyone everywhere is ICE ... ICE will be less likely to bother people

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Once everyone everywhere is ICE ... ICE will be less likely to bother people

Yes, because if there's one thing anonymous "law enforcement" groups hate, it's having more plausible deniability and the ability to hide in a larger crowd before they snatch and grab.

[-] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

The criminals are impersonating criminals.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

Who knew sending unidentified masked domestic terrorists to abduct people off the street into unmarked vehicles could lead to problems?

Fascism, folks. Always stupid. Always dangerous.

[-] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 13 points 6 days ago

How is this Possible? The Republicans RUNNING our Country have made SURE ICE is Well Uniformed, Legally Acting and ALWAYS Identifiable! And if NOT the Republicans running our Country have been SWIFT to Promote them!

[-] ghost_towels@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 days ago

You know, this wouldn’t be as much of an issue if they had to, I don’t know, IDENTIFY THEMSELVES.

[-] aramis87@fedia.io 11 points 6 days ago

This article is from February, I'm sure there've been a bunch more since then.

Fucking excellent.

THE POLICE PROBLEM

3444 readers
69 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.
