I never imagined I would see a US Senator get manhandled to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents for asking questions at a press conference.

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 46 points 3 weeks ago

I've imagined it. I've also imagined worse, and I'm fairly certain I'll see it in the not to distant future. Trump is almost at the 'kill legislators and judges' stage of his fascist takeover.

I wonder if Democrats will learn something from this, or if Schumer will demand Padilla apologize before next week.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

Attempting to ask questions, they steamrolled him before he had the chance to ask.

[-] TipRing@lemmy.world 73 points 3 weeks ago

They claim he didn't identify himself, but the video shows he clearly states "I am Senator Alex Padilla and I have questions for Ms. Noem"

[-] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 32 points 3 weeks ago

why does anyone care what "they" claim at this point? It's probably 70% straight up lies.

[-] tomkatt@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

70% straight up lies.

Only 70%… I see you’re feeling generous today.

[-] j0ester@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

I’m sure if he knew what was going to happen, he would say “puppy killer Noem”.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 56 points 3 weeks ago

That title implies something far less violent than what happened to him. You can detain people without tackling them to the ground.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago

It's Politico. I'm surprised they didn't go full passive voice and write the headline from the point of view of the handcuffs.

Aren't all members of congress exempt from arrest while performing their duties?

[-] Stillwater@sh.itjust.works 51 points 3 weeks ago

Isn't everyone exempt from arrest when just asking questions?

One would think

[-] Dubiousx99@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago

I think it is defined as they are protected in travel to, from, and while sitting in formal sessions, not official duties.

Snippet from the constitution.

They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Reminds me of that scene in Pink Floyd “the Wall” where the guy at the microphone starts, pointing out people who don’t belong, and the police just automatically arrest and drag those people out…

Here is video. https://youtu.be/3Cv-TtudBPQ

[-] criss_cross@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Still can’t believe the Nostalgia Critic thought this scene was vague.

[-] Clam_Cathedral@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 weeks ago

Here's a longer video that includes him getting cuffed on the floor. https://youtu.be/DsQ5YvT_28Y

[-] Zombie@feddit.uk 6 points 3 weeks ago

The uploader has not made this video available in your country.

Rude.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Somewhat disappointed it's not the Pink Floyd video. ;)

I wish nothing but the worst possible outcomes for every single person within the trump regime.

I hope that their loved ones turn their backs. I hope that the rest of their lives, and the end of their lives, are filled with fear, regret, pain, and crushing loneliness.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

And honestly, that is only the things that can be said. I wish far worse in these terrorists.

[-] Binky@lemmy.sdf.org 28 points 3 weeks ago

Fuck I hate this administration…

[-] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 12 points 3 weeks ago

Regime. It’s a regime, not an administration.

[-] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

so what? what is posting a comment going to do?

[-] roguelazer@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago

Cory Booker's response speech is pretty incredible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4_H_KNAakE

Apparently the House is now considering a motion to censure... Padilla... Fucking Mike Johnson

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

The House has fuck all to do with the Senate.

[-] aramova@infosec.pub 7 points 3 weeks ago

True, but explaining that to the orange nosed ass-kissers of the Mustard Mussolini won't get us anywhere.

Americans need to remember lessons of the past. All of Europe and America at the time couldn't "negotiate" with Nazis. Only thing they understood was a bayonet in the gut.

Modern Nazis are the same way.

Like Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance... The only way to ensure tolerance is not to tolerate intolerance.
