My friend usess this argument all the time and it's so annoying... Why should the wealthy suffer for destroying the environment when you also drive a car....

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago

Your friend is a cuck for the rich.

[-] ProvableGecko@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago
[-] kozy138@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

He's definitely been called that before lol

[-] kozy138@lemm.ee 6 points 1 week ago

It's not his fault though. It's due to all the techno-optimist propaganda spouted out by various media channels by the techbros and the people profiting off of fossil fuels.

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

I'm subjected to the same propaganda as he is.

Probably, like most men his age.

[-] Schmuppes@lemmy.today 10 points 1 week ago

Is your friend very wealthy?

[-] kozy138@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

On a global scale, yeah, probably top 10%

Locally, not really. Just the average American income.

[-] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 6 points 1 week ago

Because the majority of the population always tries to copy the rich. Eating lavish meals with lots of meat was the norm in high society so now it's what everybody wants for dinner. A large manicured lawn was a show of wealth and thus everybody now wants their patch of well maintained grass, even in a desert. Flying and vacations on the other side of the planet was for the jet set so now everybody gets in economy class for holiday. Trickle down is also for habits, life style and consumption. They are the example to follow and should behave like it. It's the old concept of noblesse oblige.

[-] HistoryPug@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

Stop being friends with idiots

[-] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

See, structures dont exist and there are only differences if kind, not if scale. Anyone who says otherwise is a filthy fucking commie and needs to die in the camps.

So your feiend sounds great. Great friend. Keep that one close. He (because clearly someone i agree with wouldn't be of an inferior sex) is one of the good ones. Keep him close and never call him on his shit.

[-] thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world 87 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Diesel is sailboat engine are generally very efficient. Most the time she probably spends sailing, but if the wind isn’t strong enough or in the wrong direction you don’t really have another option.

Source: I’m a sailor and own a sailboat

[-] LaserTurboShark69@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 week ago

What's it like being sail?

[-] topherclay@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

It'sail good man, just go with the flow.

[-] Iceman@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago
[-] CommissarVulpin@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

Aren’t you legally required to have some kind of backup propulsion source anyway?

[-] Lv_InSaNe_vL@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I'm sure this varies widely by jurisdiction, but at least in my part of the states no. I just have a (smaller) sailboat and my "backup" is just ors and the coast guard haha

[-] Knightfox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Even if it weren't a legal requirement I would hope people would have the common sense and desire for personal safety that they would have it there for a backup. I imagine our knowledge and surveillance of weather makes it a lot easier to sail if you have that information, but you could easily be stuck for a very long time if you only relied on sailing. From what I have read the Mayflower was delayed for over a month at sea due to the changing of the winds.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

You want to rely on motor in really bad weather, or when you get stranded in the middle of nowhere with no wind.

[-] thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Not sure about legal requirements but it wouldn’t surprise me

[-] Apocalypteroid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Beat me to it. If the sails aren't up you just drift if you're not under motor. If there's not enough or too much or the wind is in the wrong direction then you don't have any choice.

[-] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 68 points 1 week ago

Ah ha, I have pointed out a minor hypocrisy, your entire existence is invalid!

Everyone is a hypocrite. It's pointless to point out hypocrisy for its own sake.

Only the absolutely perfect can be the enemy of the genocidal apocalypse cult. There are only two lebels of morqlity and no such thing as structural forces.

[-] JimmyMcGill@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Is it hipocrisy tho?

Like if you say to someone that says that we shouldn’t use single use plastics for food, that they still use single use plastics for their surgery, that’s not hipocrisy. Context matters.

Of course she isn’t going to deliver critical aid to where a genocide is happening via bicycle

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Doesn't even matter: https://x.com/brianoflondon

Brian got 2.1M views, Bashar got 1M and boosted Brian. Brian won the engagement game.

This is why Twitter should burn to the ground.

indigenous rights activist

Decolonizer

Zionist

Woo lad, the gymnastics of this guy put the Olympics to shame

[-] carotte 17 points 1 week ago

this guy bases his """decolonial""" beliefs not on meaningful connections to the land like actual indigenous rights activists, but on blood and soil rhetoric

he’s as much of a decolonizer as far-right europeans who want to expel all immigrants

[-] puchaczyk 9 points 1 week ago

He's only a Zionist. All other tittles are there just to make people doubt by association that being Zionist is wrong.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Engagement are fake statistics. Look at the likes and retweets. Bashar is ratio'ing the Zionist 10x.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Engagement are fake statistics.

Is it?

Either way, being ratioed doesn’t matter. The troll was fed, en masse.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 28 points 1 week ago

The israel flag in the name of the guy really hits. Do they need to use the EXACT playbook of the fascists around the world? A couple of years ago I would have suspected satire but satire died some time ago, sadly.

[-] BoycottPro@lemm.ee 25 points 1 week ago

Reminds me about what they used to say about Al Gore on Fox "News". They said he takes private jets. It's a bad faith argument because those people then go on to deny climate change. Also he's a former vice president, I'm sure security reasons are part of that decision. Also if those private jets allow him to be more productive in fighting climate change the net benefit of him using it may exceed the additional carbon generated by the jets.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 27 points 1 week ago

Greta actually follows this priciple pretty well and does not fly unless absolutely necessary. In this case she is taking a boat which is one of the most efficient ways of transporting goods such as humanitarian aid.

Minor addition - in this case, it's literally the only possible delivery mechanism. Any other mode of transportation is functionally impossible.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Israel should build a giant railway leading into to the Gaza concentration camp.

For environmental concerns, of course.

[-] BoycottPro@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

That's a good point, makes what Brian was saying about Gretta even worse.

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 week ago

The first name "Al" has been ruined, my first thought was "they're making AI gore?".

[-] BoycottPro@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago

I wish fonts made the difference between uppercase i and lowercase L as clear as possible. I don't understand why most computer fonts don't put lines above and below the uppercase i like I think everyone is taught in school to do.

[-] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Those lines are called serifs, and that's where the term "sans serif" for different typefaces comes from ("sans" is French for "without.") That Wikipedia page mentions claims that sans serif is more legible online, but I have not looked into the sources and don't know enough about webpage design to make any claims about that myself.

[-] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Serifs were always considered beneficial to reading fast or for conveying info. This is debated now I think because of course it is. Sans fonts mostly stayed in the headline and ad copy toolbox until shitty screens were shitty at displaying serifs. So they took off and leaked a little beyond their true stature among font styles.

Serifs are better in the same general sense that OpenDyslexia is better as a font for both sufferers and some others. Your brain can do its thing, reading at any speed needs some of that back door stuff like serifs to stop you reading that letter (like Al and AI) and and tossing all that buffer to wonder what the fucking word is.

Just my stoned opinion as a former graphics guy from the print days until Adobe went real extra stupid.

He never HAD to take a private jet. Why are you shilling for millionnaires?

[-] cupcakezealot 12 points 1 week ago

because it's not the 1400s and you literally need an engine in a sailboat when docking or ferrying or, you know, when there's literally no wind.

[-] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 2 points 1 week ago

The best part is that people who criticise her for things like that are the same people who have a fuck greta sticker on their coal rolling yank tanks. So they should agree with her.

[-] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

meh weak trolling at best

[-] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Technically she's carpooling no?

[-] crusa187@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago

Decent troll attempt, 2/8

[-] chocosoldier 1 points 1 week ago

i know she's grown up now but it's still amazing to me how they got the entire "white christian male" crowd to have such judgment and hatred for a little girl. propaganda is a helluva drug people.
