What is this thing? (self.asklemmy)
submitted 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) by DoGeeseSeeGod to c/asklemmy@lemmy.world

My desk is cluttered and I just found this thing on it. I'm worried it's some egg from a insect. It's extremely hard tho I try as hard as I can, but I can't squish it with my fingers. It's mostly see through which doesn't seem bug like. Looks more like a pill or a maybe a stone from some jewelry. But don't take any pills like this or have any jewelry with that color stone that anyone in the house wears really

maybe a bead from a dessicant packet? They're usually more clear, but can sometimes drift towards brown.

[-] DoGeeseSeeGod 3 points 4 days ago

Maybe I'll check for a dessicant packet but I usually throw those away ASAP cuz they poisonous to cats

If it's desiccant you could bake it at 250F for about an hour. It should turn a different color. Then if you re-wet it, it will go back to that color.

But if it's not desiccant, you might just melt some plastic or cause it to pop or something else.

Interesting ty!

[-] AmidFuror@fedia.io 12 points 3 days ago

It's just a penny. Worth about 1 cent.

[-] DoGeeseSeeGod 4 points 3 days ago

Lol ok ty! That's a relief!

[-] TheAlbatross 14 points 4 days ago

Perhaps a filling bead from a stuffed thing?

[-] DoGeeseSeeGod 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Or maybe a weighted blanket??? I have one of those.

Just felt it and it feels like sand in there. Much smaller than the thing I found.

[-] Jerb322@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

Is there a mosquito inside it? You could start Jurassic park.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

Looks like a vitamin D pill, but those are squishy.

[-] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 8 points 4 days ago

Yea, I've never seen a gelcap that small, but it looks exactly like a gelcap.

So I'm with you, it's a gelcap

[-] littletoolshed@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

And like, idk, aren’t those pills maybe 5 times larger than this thing?

[-] JamonBear@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Or maybe OP followed one of these enlarge you penny tutorial you find on the internet...

[-] meco03211@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Settle down Mr. Moranis.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Depends on the dosage, I've seen little ones like that.

[-] littletoolshed@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

No shit? That sounds wild. What’s the application?

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Boosting vitamin d increases immune defense. Good for warding off cold and flu in climates that don't get enough sunlight.

OTOH, in me, it also increased kidney stone production. :( So while I dodged the cold, flu and covid, I also had 6 kidney stones.

I was actually asking about the teeny tiny gelcaps you referred? I have never seen any even close to that size! Usually they are somewhat larger. I just found this page with some cool info, https://www.trustar-pharma.com/info/softgel-sizes-the-ultimate-guide-37148451.html

Sorry to hear about your kidney stones! That does not sound super fun!

Do you have any natural wood around like the desk? It could be a drop of resin that came out of wood.

[-] DoGeeseSeeGod 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Honestly, idk what my desk is. I got it for free from a friend. It looks like wood but its stupid heavy and sturdy. I knock on it and sounds like wood. I've moved several times and it's holding up perfect.

I had another desk start to crumble after the 1st move. Was done for after the 2nd move.

I like to use things until they die, but this desk I could see lasting another 10 or more years. It's built like a rock. Which kinda sucks cuz it is a really basic desk, no shelves or storage or anything.

Just did the math I'm pretty sure I've had it for at least 10-12 years. No idea how long the original owner had it. Survived at least 6 moves... I think this post should really be about what the fuck my desk is lol

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 6 points 4 days ago

Sounds to me like your desk is possibly antique & made out of actual wood, like oak or mahogany, instead of the glue and sawdust particle board modern furniture is made out of.

The old stuff was meant to be handed down for generations, the new stuff falls apart when you rearrange the room.

Congratulations! Don't paint it weird colors and check once in a while that all the screws are tight because you will never find matching hardware to replace it.

[-] DoGeeseSeeGod 2 points 3 days ago

I've always wondered if it was some real wood, but still can't wrap my head around how heavy it is. I can shift it but I'm not sure if I could actually lift it by myself. Certainly not more than a inch too. Then again I'm not exactly swole lol

I plan on keeping it as long as I can. It's currently a light pale color. Maybe I'll stain it a darker color one of these days.

You've gotta help us help you here.

Do you open shipping boxes on your desk? I've gotten things from ppl (Etsy, Ebay) in reused boxes and have had random detritus fall out of them from whatever the sender had been storing in them. So it could be from jewelry, just not your jewelry.

[-] DoGeeseSeeGod 3 points 3 days ago

Occasionally I'll open stuff there but not recently that I can remember

[-] RedditIsDeddit@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

it looks like a pill to me
