In case anyone needed a reminder who the police actually serve..
(hint: it isn't you)

nor the planet

The state is equally responsible as oil companies.

Remember who they are when your house gets destroyed in a wildfire, your anger is justified and they deserve retribution

[-] silence7@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 year ago

In democracies, you have the power to change ge who runs the state. That's generally a lot easier than violent retribution

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Too bad we're fresh out of democracies. All we have left are oligarchies and corporatocracies.

[-] hh93@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

The problem is that a huge portion of humans are easily influenced and susceptible to propaganda.

If one party tells you that you have to adapt your lifestyle since using gas and oil for transportation and heating and eating meat every day is not going to work for longer and another party lies in your face that it's not a problem then people will totally fall for the bullshit that lets them live in ignorance.

Just look at how often you read the "100 companies" bullshit here that is shifting the blame but completely ignoring that personal responsibility has to come first so politicians have a chance. If a politician would suggest to triple prices on gas prices, flying and eating meat that politician would never win an election even though it would be necessary to do.

Sure the 100 billionaires that are emitting 1000x as much as a normal person are gigantic assholes and their emissions should be brought down but changing the emissions of a whole country has a far bigger effect.

Yeah it's working out great.

[-] vector_zero@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

If they're cracking down on the people gluing themselves to random objects/highways and, as is described in the article, assaulting others with rocks, then I see nothing wrong with that.

[-] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 50 points 1 year ago

Seriously being treated as a terrorist and 30 days of jail for maybe glueing yourself on a street as polictical protest, is a normal fair reaction in your mind?

[-] SkyeStarfall 24 points 1 year ago

So you see anything wrong with the people in power basically dooming humanity to a climate ravaged future?

Because to me that is far far far more extreme and unacceptable than some small number of protestors.

I wish protestors could go far further. They are perfectly justified in doing so.

[-] vector_zero@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago
[-] SkyeStarfall 16 points 1 year ago

Yeah, no, sorry, I'm not gonna side against the protestors. What they should truly do is halt the whole economy, to really make the people in power feel it.

Anything less than that and it can just be ignored.

"oh the inconvenience!" piss off you'll be remembering this in a few years when the supply chains go to shit cause of the impending temp shift

[-] riodoro1@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

MUH CONVENIENCE

Fucking short sighted apes

[-] vector_zero@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

ATTACKING RANDOM PEOPLE AND HALTING TRAFFIC INDISCRIMINATELY

Psychotic terrorist.

[-] sentient_loom@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Right, self-described "climate protestors" aren't necessarily helping the environment.

We are all doing better than the "glue yourself to things" people because they're moving things backwards, turning people against climate action, distracting from climate issues.

[-] Rozauhtuno 1 points 1 year ago

What's the alternative to be heard? Be quiet and hope that politicians will finally do something? We've been doing that for the past 40 years and it didn't work.

I stand with the orcas, not with the boots.

There was this post on tiktok today of some psycho us Marshall ramming protestors vehicles and everyone was like "fuck yeah. Show them who is boss"

I felt really out of place. Like. How is this ok? How is this going to make housing more affordable?

[-] sour@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 year ago

if inconvenience then shoot the messenger

.__.

[-] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

To be fair, tiktok is faaaar from the smartest and brightest of us.

I'm gonna play the armchair psychologist for a moment and say it's probably related to the moral rebel effect. When people are confronted with someone saying that a group they're part of of is morally wrong, a lot of them tend to feel threatened and react aggressively. It's the reason why some many are instinctively aggressive towards vegans.

Basically, when some people see climate protesters reminding them that a lot of everyday choices they make are wrong, they perceive it as a personal attack and jump back to tribalism.

Or maybe it's just road rage ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ

[-] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 18 points 1 year ago

ITT people gatekeeping climate activists and adding nothing of value to the conversation.

[-] Rozauhtuno 7 points 1 year ago

"Why don't you try saving the planet by signing some petitions on change.org? Or just do fuck all, like me ๐Ÿ™‚"

[-] LilDestructiveSheep@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

It's ridiculous how many cops are getting by one an occasion like these. Anything else happening and they be like "nah".

Eat the rich!

[-] BastingChemina@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 year ago

About the protest in France. At the time of the protest there was literally just a big hole in the ground, nothing that could be damaged by the protesters.

The protesters wanted to reach it, say that they are against it and leave.

But instead, for no valid reason since there is nothing to protect, the police attacked the protesters injuring hundred of protesters. They shot 5000 teargas grenades for 6000 protesters, including families that came for a peaceful protest.

[-] andymouse@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

But WHY? Seriously, are these cops brainwashed? Have they no children?

I know, I know, 1312 - but really? How much of a bastard can you be?

Does anyone know a goddamn cop who can explain what the fuck is going on in their minds?

LOSE YOUR JOB! DO WHATEVER ELSE! PICK UP EMPTY CANS ON THE STREET! Isn't anything better than doing this??

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
