I'm looking to host a (very) basic website - assume limited technical knowledge - most likely with WordPress (though I am open to alternative suggestions).

Do ppl have recommendations on non US hosting platforms where I can also purchase a domain?

Price is of course important but not high up on my list, I would rather spend money to make sure its non US and as easy as possible to use.

I use Inleed and I'm really happy with them. It's a Swedish company with servers in Sweden and France. My WordPress site was super easy to set up through them. Hosting is as cheap as โ‚ฌ2/month and you can buy your domain through them too.

https://uberspace.de/en/

Also static page generators like hugo or nikola.

Thanks. Will check them out.

They got tons of tutorials and encourage you to expand on your technical knowledge. Also, I've never seen somebody, who didn't make it. Warning: they all became more nerdy :-)

Awesome. I can traverse from geek to nerd. Lol.

I use a small French company called monarobase. I don't use it but they offer wordpress hosting (and they have easy to use assistant for all their other offers). I've been their customer for well over 10 years now and I wouldn't want a larger more widely known host because 1) I never had any major issue with them, contrary to larger ones 2) their customer support is is the closest to perfection I have ever dealt withโ€”which I find invaluable since I have myself very, very limited technical knowledge: every time I've made an oopsie, they fixed it in a matter of hours (and they never laughed at me :p)

If you want a bigger host and not some small French one (we have great cheese, too), like already suggested I would say the German at Hetzner are great but depending the offer, you will have a lot of maintenance to do yourself. So is the Swiss Infomaniak, I can say I really like what they're trying to make with their Site Creator, even though it still needs some work.

Infomaniak cloud/office suite is also very nice, if anyone is interested: myksuite.

WorPress (though I am open to alternative suggestions).

I started to use WP when it first appeared but in the last decade or so I became incredibly tired with both the direction it was going and the constant flow of feature updates and countless security updates. Not mentioning extensions). I wanted something a lot less demanding, simple and less bloated. I learned to use Hugo, a static website generator. That's what I'm now using. May not fit all use case but it's perfect for me. And I have zero maintenance (security or whatever) server side, since Hugo is only installed on my computer on the website is 100% static.

infomanaiak is based in switzerland and does hosting as well as dns

note that i literally just googled this, i dont have any experience with them but they seem like a good company (incresingly employee owned!)

-- their web host is like 6โ‚ฌ/month https://www.infomaniak.com/en/hosting/web-hosting

-- about them https://www.infomaniak.com/en/about

Employer owned peaks my interest. Ta! Will have a look.

I did a Google search as well before I asked the question here - hopefully I get some use case replies.

InfinityFree are based in the Netherlands, though at one point at least they were using US servers. It seems like the best solution for free hosting by far.

Ionos are German based I think
