The Michigan Court of Appeals, in an 18-page opinion, declined to interfere with a 1931 law that carries a five-year prison term for simply having brass knuckles, also known as metallic knuckles.

A “ban on the possession of metallic knuckles falls within the historical tradition of prohibiting the concealed carry of metallic knuckles as a dangerous and unusual weapon,” Judge Christopher Murray wrote in a 3-0 opinion Tuesday.

Brass knuckles are usually a single set of rings that fits on someone’s hand. A punch can inflict serious injuries.

America is weird af. Ban brass knuckles but allow semi-automatic weapons that kill thousands every year.

Weird. As. Fuck.

[-] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 49 points 1 month ago

People will still sell them labeled as key-chains or paperweights.

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

This guy capitals.

[-] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

They have been doing this for years. They add a little bump and sell it as a belt buckle, or add a little notch and sell it as a bottle opener. Most insane is it is fine to put a knife blade on it and sell it as a knife.

[-] Yokozuna@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Yep, they sell them as belt buckles. I got one at a gun show because it was cheap, figured why not. I eventually looked up the legality and I would be better off legally if I carried a pistol. Actually crazy lol.

[-] josefo@leminal.space 8 points 1 month ago

Obviously the answer to the paradox is to have semi-automatic brass knuckles invented.

Reggie Kray on the other side of the sea about self defense:

[-] danhab99@programming.dev 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Afaik it's because there's absolutely no other applications for brass knuckles to work. You can only assault people with brass knuckles.

Fire-arms can be used for "defence" and "hunting".

Edit: inb4 I don't agree with laws around brass knuckles, or most laws about most weapons.

[-] mira13@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

A brass knuckle can also be used for defence.

If you CAN use a firearm for defence, you're not properly storing your firearm...

You don't need large magazines or semi-automatic weapons for hunting...

[-] noxypaws@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

If you CAN use a firearm for defence, you're not properly storing your firearm...

Can you explain what you mean by this?

[-] Beastlygr@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I think what they are trying to say that if you can quickly grab your loaded firearm and be ready for defense, then you are not storing your firearms correctly. Firearms should be locked up and ammo kept separate.

[-] noxypaws@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

That's insane. Sure when it's being STORED it won't be accessible quickly. But when it's being carried, that's just absurd.

[-] danhab99@programming.dev 4 points 1 month ago

He's tryna be a macho man who lives life on the edge and drives a Hummer. Give their kind a down vote and scroll on friend :)

[-] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

All the mouth breather Americans are down voting you for simply speaking the truth

[-] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 month ago

If someone attacks you first, and you slip on the brass knuckles before defending yourself, then surely that would be a defensive use?

[-] danhab99@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah this is that kind of rules-lawyering grey area that everybody's too busy to deal with. It's the same issue with the assault rifles and large mags.. they're very clearly weapons of war but they look like guns and all* guns can be used for hunting.

[-] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

That's bullshit and you know it

[-] danhab99@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

Yes... Gun laws in the US are bullshit.

[-] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 4 points 1 month ago

In most states you need a license to carry a gun with you though.

[-] freely1333@reddthat.com 9 points 1 month ago

I thought it was to conceal carry? My state I don’t think you need a license for any type of carry though. Which seems pretty legit now, considering. I feel like open carrying is way more sketchy than concealed.

[-] JudahBenHur@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

I was walking along the shore in North Myrtle Beach and some jackass had colt .45 in a cowboy holster around his waist. He was walking with another chubby dude who was pretty obviously his friend. Never before have I seen such a fuckin chode

[-] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago

Not anymore. Most states now have constitutional/permitless carry. Doesn't apply if you're a felon, have a history of drug abuse etc etc (varies by state).

[-] FireTower@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

In 21/50 you need a license.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 60 points 1 month ago

The solution is clearly to start carrying brass knuckle guns.

[-] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

trench-knives are pretty solid

[-] The_Caretaker@lemm.ee 55 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Michigan also forbids pepper spray and stun guns. They interpret the right to bear arms as the right to make gun manufacturers rich. By the way, a pistol also fits in one hand and can be used to inflict serious injury. Pistols also get used to ambush people. Ever heard of armed robbery?

[-] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 17 points 1 month ago

The US looks stupider and stupider with each passing day.

Brass knuckles? No no.

Automatic weapons? A citizen’s right.

The world is laughing at you.

[-] scoobford@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

Automatic weapons are regulated and cost more than a new car. Our firearms laws are lax and have many problems, but that isn't one of them.

[-] The_Caretaker@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago

Sap gloves are easy to make and not obvious. A pair of gloves with powdered lead sewn into little pouches over the knuckles and along the knife edge of the hand. A slap or punch will quickly put someone on the floor. Lots of cops wear them. You can get them online.

[-] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Of course bear arms don’t fit. They’re for fingers, and human ones at that though perhaps a cub could surprise a few.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

I mean, I don't know about you, but my trained attack bears have custom machined brass knuckles. only the best for my trained bears.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

My assault bears are outfitted with those wolverine blades. They are absolutely devastating to my furniture.

[-] Professorozone@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

No switch blades, no brass knuckles, oh well, guess they'll just have to shoot each other.

[-] Cattail@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

i never got that. arms shouldn't be limited to firearms, clearly the founding fathers fought with swords and bayonets so that would have been on their mind

[-] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

What the fuck is wrong with judges?

[-] Scott_of_the_Arctic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Pretty sure fingers are part of the arms but ok.
