I'm really confused as to why 'Russians' are generalized as the last domino here

Like, could have easily been 'Putin', but even then are we content with stopping at removing despots? Let's at least aim a bit higher, maybe 'oligarchy', or even 'capital owners' if we're being ambitious.

[-] toxiczombie@lemm.ee 27 points 1 day ago

Yeah. I've no problem with the Russian civilians as an American. But I do have a problem with Putin as he seems intent to make himself everyone's problem just like our wannabe dictators.

Fuck Tesla. Fuck Elon. Fuck Trump. Fuck corpo pigs

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Right now Canadians and Europeans are wondering “How do we stop America”. And, as an American, I’m certainly not going to obsess over splitting hairs there.

I don’t think there’s any kind of international aggression these days where it should be implied we’d “go after the civilian population”. Sadly, Israel disagrees.

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 day ago

Capitalism. Everyday russians have nothing to do with the problem.

[-] Aqarius@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Because for a disturbingly large segment of the American population, the Cold War staying cold made it not really register as over.

[-] sudo@programming.dev 3 points 22 hours ago

Americans must externalize their own internal contradictions onto Russia. Liberals be scape-goating.

[-] Lemminary@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

It should say Kremlin, imo.

[-] Petter1@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

I hope there will be revised version soon. I really like the style it delivers the message.

[-] dumpsterac1d@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago

It's really just X. Focus on X imo.

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

You mean Twitter, right?

[-] SolidShake@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago

man. i dont think any of this would be happening if people weren't fucking lazy and just voted in November. like god damn who cares if the line is long for one night.

[-] OwlHamster@lemm.ee 4 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

People don't know how to participate in a democracy, it's ridiculous.

If millions upon millions of people in your country want to vote far right, you're not going to get Bernie, you have to compromise. You pick the one that has the most likelihood of pulling your country in the direction you want, because the alternative is that you don't get anything at all. You can't be entitled, because you have to share your country with 350 million other people. Fucking compromise or get fascism.

[-] Ferrous@lemmy.ml 34 points 1 day ago

There are numerous ideological and philosophical frameworks that attempt to explain how fascism takes rise, so why do you just blame it on laziness?

Did Hitler come to power because of German industrialization, German embarrassment from WWI, the great depression, and other global economic hardships, or did Hitler come to power simply because Germans were lazy and didn't vote?

Our turn towards fascism was inevitable, and it can be explained better than with some nebulous concept of "laziness".

At the very minimum, start asking yourself why Americans are not enthusiastic about voting.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Because laziness gave it the win.

Lots of things can give rise to fascism, but when people stay at home they give it a free pass to take control. We had the easiest chance of hitting the brakes.

Voting is EASY.

All we had to do was vote. If trump doesn’t leave then it’s going to cost lives to change. Damn fool to think otherwise.

[-] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Voting May be easy where you are. But it's literally made difficult in a lot of places. If you are new to Texas for example, getting registered to vote is a whole ordeal. It involves ancient websites to check your registration status and then if you find out you aren't registered, you have to go to another website, fill out a bunch of information and then you have to print it out, sign it and then mail it in. And if you made any mistakes you won't find out for 10-15 days as the mail has to get to them, they have to look it over and then they mail you a response to tell you there are errors. On top of all of that, they have a system where they pay people to report voter registration that are suspected to be fraudulent and those registrations generally get purged without notifying the voter. So if you were a false positive (many people are) and then you find out the day you go to vote that you aren't registered, you just don't get to vote that year.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Harder than fascism?

Yeah, I know they go out of their way to make it hard in democratic and minority strongholds. But that’s not everyone.

[-] Ferrous@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

Why were people lazy?

[-] Wilco@lemm.ee 21 points 1 day ago

They purged voter roll, but only for democrats.

Technically legal.

[-] Crikeste@lemm.ee 13 points 1 day ago

That happens every single election. How about, instead of attacking people who are rightfully unconvinced this system works, you attack the people actually doing the fascism.

You’re like a fuckin’ Russian bot, only helping to divide. Fuckin’ dumbass democrats, man. This is why you lose.

[-] DadVolante@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You insult this person and accuse them and dividing, only to say "fuckin Democrats, this is why you always lose".

Who's dividing here again, chum? Practice what you preach

I'm not a Democrat and I share their sentiment.

80 million of y'all didn't show up and instead of looking at ourselves, we just blame the Dems for not matching our purity politics enough.

80 million didn't show. They had weeks to turn in a vote via mail or just finding a local place to do it.

We all had options. 80 million decided to do nothing and they share just as much the blame and anyone for this.

[-] Crikeste@lemm.ee 8 points 1 day ago

It’s a common democrat knee jerk reaction to blame anyone but the perpetrators, that’s why. It’s course correcting.

And show me an election that doesn’t have similar numbers of non-voters. They aren’t to blame. People vote when they get inspired. And not being another person is not very inspiring.

They were supposed to vote to save what? As far as I can tell, the vast majority of people are struggling and want change. People are on the edge and are kept just complacent enough to not fall off.

I’ll say it again: Keep blaming the nonvoters and you will continue to lose. INSPIRE THEM INSTEAD.

[-] DadVolante@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

There are a LOT of factors that deserve them, and non voters are one of them.

Keep blaming other people for your inaction, and see how that works out.

Vote to save WHAT? Trans rights? Gay rights? The fuckin first amendment??? Social Security?

I'm glad you aren't directly affected by any of this and therefore justified not doing what you can with what you have to keep other groups safe

Hope the weather is good up there on your high horse.

[-] Petter1@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think, not voting, is the wrong way of expressing not being convinced of the system.

I think the better approach would be vote, but try to spread the word why you’re inconvenienced, try to force government to be more transparent, sue politicians that do corrupt stuff, organise demonstrations and strike with precise demands like improve transparency of politics, found only trustworthy journalism, fact check anything and add sources to information/misinformation, track sources truthness not by 0 and 1 but between 0% and 100%, teach empathy to anybody, make music, talk to many people

But i am lucky, as my people before me have done that already, well, still hard job to maintain…

[-] fin@sh.itjust.works 61 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It shouldn't be Russians, but Putin

Edit: You know what, some Russians are good people. Not everyone in Russia is a bootlicker

[-] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Of course this is true but when youre in a conflict you dont have the luxury of making distictions.

This is like Americans reminding us 'not all Americans are like this'. Its like, yeah bro we know but your country is actively threatening ours, so tough.

Is ok to be xenophobe against Russians now?

There are plenty of Russians who are wonderful persons.

It's like judging all Americans for what Trump is doing.

[-] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's like judging all Americans for what Trump is doing.

In case you haven't noticed, that is what is happening

[-] Xhead@lemmings.world 11 points 1 day ago

There are also plenty of Russians invading their neighbour, slaughtering thousands of innocent people.

Just like the complacent Americans sitting by watching their "leader" destroy the civility of the free world. The Russians are no better.

[-] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

Being a bad or good person is not tied to nationality.

I understand all the hate against billionares and political elite, but what's up with hating russians, including civilians? Especially these days, when russian citizen equals to bloody war, poverty and censorship.

[-] x1gma@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Because it's always been like that. An enemy image unites, and allows for political agendas which wouldn't be possible otherwise. China and Taiwan? Israel and Gaza? The middle east? Jugoslawia? Kosovo and Albania? The soviets, Hitler, the OG fascist Mussolini, and even they weren't the first ones.

Having an enemy helps unite people against them, and as long as the image of the enemy being present and being a danger is fed, inner conflicts matter way less, since the "danger" is the enemy.

For America it's an especially interesting case:

  • America spends ~900 billion dollars on military, which is as much as the next most spending 9 countries combined. Source. Fuck knows if that's super accurate, it's a fuckton. America's main export good is war, so any enemy is a good enemy, and any war is a good war. Suddenly, the 66.5 billion spent on Ukraine since 2022 aren't that much anymore.
  • The "commies" and the "reds" are an historic enemy, and have been for a significant time of America's existence. America has existed for 249 years this year. The soviet union existed for 69 years, counting in the Russian Republic right before its 74 years. Right before that was the Russian empire, which existed for 196 years. The Russians, in some form, have been an enemy since basically forever.
  • A comparatively extremely dumb population on average at least in regard to the non-american world, in addition to intolerance of the "non-american way" of doing things and disinterest in other cultures.

And since the average American already is used in thinking black and white with glorious freedom of two-party pseudo democracy, it's even easier to get the enemy image going.

For some variance, China can be used sometimes too.

And before I get called a Russian bot, fuck Putin, fuck Trump, fuck Musk, and many other political figures having blood of many people on their hands.

No, a lot of people hate on the Russian government. I will say that the comic should say Russia instead of Russians to clarify that, unless the author themself is incorrect/misled.

Russia is the one who has been supporting Trump through their bot network in various social medias. We're basically fighting an information war, and yet we basically won't acknowledge it so we lose.

[-] Dimmer@leminal.space 11 points 1 day ago

The hate to Russia is somewhat misplaced, Putinism is more or less a by product of America. It will be less a problem once Americans stop hate themselves.
