[-] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

Why do you hate Christmas so much?

/s

It doesn't have to make sense.

[-] ansiz@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

They never went anywhere? They've been for sale around here all along.

[-] blackberry@midwest.social 5 points 23 hours ago

certain states banned them. this would federally make it illegal to ban them at the state level, as far as I understand. you know, states' rights and all

[-] TheRealKuni@midwest.social 1 points 7 hours ago

Nah, a cursory glance at the article shows it’s about reversing a push by the Biden administration to transition federal locations to using paper straws.

Last summer, the Biden administration announced an initiative to reduce single-use plastics in federal operations.

In addition to working with the private sector, other stakeholders, and state, local, Tribal, and Territorial governments to reduce the impact of plastic pollution, it planned to phase out federal procurement of single-use plastics from food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035.

[-] ahal@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago

As a non American, maybe someone can help clarify something.

My understanding is that executive orders only apply to federal agencies. So does this just mean that cafeterias in federal office buildings will need to use plastic straws? And restaurants / stores are completely unaffected by this?

[-] BmeBenji@lemm.ee 28 points 1 day ago

Yeah basically.

Praise Trump! He’s saved America by bringing plastic straws back to the White House cafeteria!

:D

someone fucking shoot me now

[-] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago

executive order! very important issue

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 146 points 2 days ago

They didn’t go anywhere. You can get them. The Woke Police aren’t going to glitter your door down and trans you. Buy all the plastic straws you want.

[-] Melody@lemmy.one 2 points 23 hours ago

We don't have to. The straws will do all the heavy lifting for us. /s

It's insidious stuff, those PFAS. :3

[-] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 37 points 1 day ago

They didn’t go anywhere. You can get them.

And seventy some million voters suddenly forgot this was true as soon as they read about this great achievement from their God-king.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

I'm picturing donvict hunched over each and every one of these dumbasses, rawdogging them w/ no lube because he'll be stealing all their benefits, putting them out of a job, putting them out on the street, deporting them, imprisoning them, quite possibly killing many of them with his policies, and then he says, mid-pump, "here, have a straw! I brought them back for you!"

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 43 points 2 days ago

The Woke Police aren’t going to glitter your door down and trans you.

Speak for yourself.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 days ago

I am all The Woke Police on this blessed day :)

The Woke Police aren’t going to glitter your door down and trans you.

Not with that attitude.

It's like he's going through every stupid fox and friends 'controversy' and just tries to 'fix' it. I think the closest anyone got to banning plastic straws is specific city ordinances in certain cities, and only for establishments that serve drinks.

[-] Jericho_Kane@lemmy.org 4 points 1 day ago

People who complain about straws are like comedians who vomplain that they can't say anything anymore without being cancelled

Jesus fuck. This cunt just cut NIH’s indirect cost payout to 15%, but at least we have plastic straws. This is going to cripple hospitals, universities, and all biomedical research in the USA.

Newsflash: his mission is to destroy the United States.

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Yes, we're aware of why he's there.

[-] EchoSpire@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 day ago

Yup. I imagine this is exactly what Putin, China, and the rich bilionaires want. I think they're playing at something the the fall of the USSR but with more of a 'controlled demolition' vibe. Oh, we'll all still get fucked while they power grab.

[-] moakley@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

If you ranked every decision he's ever made as President, this might actually be the best thing he has ever done.

[-] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 11 points 1 day ago

*worst.

It’s bad for the environment.

Apologies if you’re being sarcastic.

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

They didn't say good. They said best. Everything else has been astronomically worse.

Getting rid of plastic straws, but not plastic cups is honestly just greenwash theater.

[-] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 7 points 1 day ago

Totally misinterpreted it, thank you. The lids too. The paper cups aren’t recyclable either…I mean the Starbucks paper cup type.

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Even with the liners, they are biodegradable or burnable and can be sourced from renewable timber. You could also use recyclable aluminum cups like the ones Ball sells.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Yes, but we are grading on a curve, here, and this is donvict we are talking about.

[-] moakley@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Half sarcastic. This ranks as one of the least harmful things he's ever done, by far. Mostly because everything else he does is so fucking harmful.

But also, since we're on the subject: plastic straws don't have a significant impact on the environment. I'm not saying plastic isn't bad for the environment, but straws are a rounding error. A single pair of sneakers introduces more plastic into the environment than a lifetime of straws.

The crusade against plastic straws has always been pure virtue signaling. It pisses some people off, makes some people feel good about themselves, and has no measurable impact on the environment.

What Trump is doing is the opposite of virtue signaling. Vice signaling, I guess. But compared to the Gitmo concentration camps, it almost feels like I'm reading good news.

[-] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

IMO we need to ban plastic from anything that can be easily replaced without plastic. Even though it may be a rounding error, it's something that should be simple to say no to and to correct.

[-] moakley@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

When they come up with a good replacement for plastic straws, definitely. Again, I'm not in any way trying to say plastic isn't bad for the environment.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 1 points 3 hours ago

There are plenty of good biodegradable options which don't completely suck, they are just more expensive.

[-] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Both paper and plastic straws contain PFAS, which is unbelievably harmful to your health and the environment. The good alternative is to get a metal straw.

[-] Manalith@midwest.social 3 points 1 day ago

I carry a metal spork and metal straw in my edc to avoid using plastic ones. Not for everyone, but I like to think it does a little bit of good.

[-] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, someone else pointed out what you meant, too. But yeah I agree with you.

[-] Zero22xx 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm half expecting his next executive order to be that all ocean cleanup efforts must immediately cease and that in fact dumping in the ocean is now mandatory and anyone caught trying to dispose of trash sustainably will be jailed.

Seriously, it's gone long past the point where anyone has the slightest excuse of supporting this orange painted clown in his blonde wig and comically oversized tie without just looking like evil pieces of shit.

It's like he's actively making his way through a list of anything actually good that society has managed to achieve in the last few decades and dismantling it. I mean, we all hate cardboard straws but this clearly isn't about straws.

The guy seems to literally want to see smog fill the air and plastic fill the oceans. While simultaneously making sure that everyone is as fucking miserable as possible in terms of both human rights and economy. So what the fuck is anyone's excuse for supporting this? I don't believe that there is anything a Trump supporter could tell me now that would convince me that they're not just evil, cruel, profoundly stupid, walking talking pieces of shit.

[-] davepleasebehave@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

he's old and does not give a shit. it's never going to affect him or anyone he cares about.

The. Dumbest. Timeline.

[-] blackberry@midwest.social 1 points 23 hours ago

finally some good fucking news

[-] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 50 points 2 days ago

And this helps me pay for groceries, how?

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago

When a turtle chokes on a plastic straw, it will float to the surface, beach itself, and you can strap it to the roof of your car and drive it to your cottage where your family can feast on it for days.

So this is what will make eggs cheaper?

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yes. As soon as he figures out how to turn all those paper straws people can't use anymore into eggs. He has top people working on it. Top people.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 13 points 2 days ago

Thanks, Trump.

[-] adarza@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 days ago

lemme guess. he slobbers all over his straws and the one time he was served a paper-based straw it got a little 'mushy'.

[-] 100@fedia.io 12 points 2 days ago
