built this tool that generates custom emoticons. It’s pretty fun to use, but I feel like it could be better. Since you guys are brutally honest (and creative), I figured this is the best place to ask: What features should I add? Anything annoying or clunky about it? Any cool ideas to make it stand out? Let me know your thoughts. Rip it apart if you have to—just want to make it as good as possible. Site name: EmoticonHub

A randomizer would be great!

That was a lot of cookies to deny just for an emoticon. But fun tool!

[-] AdityaGavit@lemmy.world 41 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Oof, you're right about those cookies, definitely something I need to streamline. Thanks for pushing through and giving it a shot anyway!

[-] ShareMySims@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the heads up.

OP - my feedback is fix this.

[-] breakcore@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 month ago

Same here. Was going to give it a whirl. Not if there are a hundred trackers having fun in my browser.

found a bug ;)

Edit: where is the link?

[-] qaz@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

Is there a way to export them with Markdown to prevent missing arms?

Ooh yeah, good feature request

[-] cron@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

I haven't seen one. Would be a nice addon

Another one: some arms will make the base chars disappear when rendered (guessing it’s a diacritic thing)

[-] AdityaGavit@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

thanks for catching that bug, I will get on fixing it ASAP

[-] loudWaterEnjoyer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 48 points 1 month ago

Just me you and 748 of your closest friends, awesome. Where can I find the source?

[-] AdityaGavit@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

that was because I had applied for Ezoic earlier, but I have now removed it and changed the DNS. Could you check if you're still seeing the cookie consent? Since I m in India, I dont see these cookie notices (they're country-specific), so I would really appreciate if you could let me know if they're gone now. Thanks for flagging this

You have something like 2000 friends all wanting to contact me for legitimate interest. Is it okay, if I tell them no?

Thanks for letting me know ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Ok that one wins

[-] hansolo@lemm.ee 35 points 1 month ago

Agree with less cookies and trackers if possible. Google doesn't need to see my emoticons.

Also would prefer a JS free-version if possible, but I can see how that might not work.

Or maybe you're also collecting the IPs of everyone here by cross referencing usernames with the emoticons used in comments and copied from your site. Statistically, this would actually be pretty easy to use to doxx people's IPs/locations that way.

[-] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

A JS-free version would have to have the work offloaded to a server via an API request. I'm not sure if that'd be any better. At least with JS, you can theoretically read the code running on your machine

I don't think I've ever fully realised the depth of feeling I have for emoticons, let alone that there were others out there!

─=≡Σ((( つ•̀ω•́)つ LET'S GO!

[-] Routhinator@startrek.website 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I tried to recreate the emoticon you used, but this was the closest I could get with the available options.

(づ•̀ω•̀)づ───==≡≡ΣΣ

nice work!

i found a bug though

selecting the sixth option in the base menu puts html in the output:

(this is in Tor Browser, which is based on the "ESR" release of Firefox)

[-] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

For me the drop-down for Mouth/Nose has a lot of empty spaces, that show up when you select them.

As a emoji noob it could be nice with some text naming the specific selection.

[-] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There are few eyes with eyebrows, I can not create Lenny Face, literally unplayable! /s

Could be worth it to separate the eyebrows, because they clearly are available with some eyes, e.g. these are 2 combined characters סּ͡͡ and these also ・ิ

[-] random_character_a@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago
[-] weeeeum@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Maybe add a "Lemmy mode" since Lenny uses symbols to mark italics, bold, etc, and causes a lot of emoticons to bug out

Like ¯_ (ツ) _/¯ when it should be ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯

[-] DaforLynx@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Lemmy uses markdown to format posts. So yeah, a "markdown mode" would be awesome (just insert escape characters before each * and \ etc.)

Or maybe I'm wrong ٩(。•́‿•̀。)۶ (huh, Voyager comes with an emoticon picker)

Edit: it worked, I'm not wrong

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I like it.

May I suggest a “none” option for base/eyes/mouth too?

[-] 3dmvr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Since the options are small for stuff like eyes ahving tabs side by side in like a grid might be cleaner than going down a list, bit unnecessarily wide

[-] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

edit: oh no it looks weird on voyager

edit 2: fixed (kinda). Pretty cool website, good job!

Since EmoticonHub is pretty new, I'd love to hear any suggestions on how to get the word out. Any marketing tips would be super helpful

Maybe these arms could have the "basic" body parentheses removed like some of the others? Just thinking out loud idk if Theres a reason I missed for this

[-] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Ruin it and make yourself miserable by implementing AI into this...

Kidding aside, this is hilarious and useful at the same time! Thank you for doing something creative that does suck ass immediately
