One reading of ‘to venerate’ suggests you respect the thing for its advanced age. Another is just straight up synonymous with ‘well respected’.

It does feel slightly off as a choice of words, I don’t think it’s strictly wrong.

Not strictly wrong, but it's a really weak choice stylistically. Feels like that thesaurus tab was open for about twenty seconds.
