  1. Rape kits aren't free? I figured that because it was a response to a criminal action it counted as more legal than medical... guess you learn something new every day...

  2. BEING RAPED IS A FUCKING ELECTIVE PROCEDURE!?!?! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW!?!?!

[-] HearTwoTalk@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago

When I applied for a driver's license in Texas, they had a list of things that I could choose to pay extra for, one of which was donating money towards testing rape kits. It still infuriates that they tried to pass that off of random people.

[-] HawlSera@lemm.ee 17 points 2 days ago

One of the biggest scams the American Government ever pulled, was claiming that its responsibilities were actually that of the citizens, and that anyone who expects the Government to do anything but wield an iron fist is a "Whiny snowflake looking for a free lunch"

[-] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

That's just a symptom of the actual greatest scam: making people think the government should be a "them" instead of an "us."

Its responsibilities are those of the citizens. That's why the government exists: to regulate, pay for, and administrate those responsibilities.

[-] phx@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

That's why they exist in theory. In practice they serve a social class that's very much not "us" except for lip service

I'm not sure how old the image is, but I know many states (since this shit only happens in one place, it seems) have made laws requiring rape kits to be paid for by the police, even if you don't want a report. I don't exactly remember how it works, but you do have to report the crime to the police, so the hospital paperwork gets handled, but you don't have to have suffer through the interview of a detective or the DA's office.

"Brian Thompson was never satisfied with the Status Quo."

Yeah clearly he wanted something closer to Handmaiden's Tale

[-] Kalysta@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

Fuck UHC. I hope you’re doing better. If so consider getting a lawyer and/or going to the newspaper if you think you can do it.

No one should have to pay for that. No one.

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Not me but thank you, some poor soul I saw on Bluesky.

[-] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 272 points 3 days ago

Just because it is legal, doesn't mean it isn't punishable.

[-] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 91 points 3 days ago

Conversely, just because murder is illegal... doesn't mean it's always wrong.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 30 points 3 days ago

If you kill a man in the heat of battle you’re a hero. If you kill a man in the heat of passion you’re a murderer.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 55 points 3 days ago

So because she likely hasn't the energy to sue, they just lie? Being raped is not an "elective procedure".

[-] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 days ago

"you could have kept the illegitimate product of rape child"

[-] medgremlin@midwest.social 34 points 3 days ago

A rape kit is to collect evidence. It has nothing to do with emergency contraception. The ER can prescribe something like Plan B for that purpose, but it is not something that a "rape kit" does.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 12 points 2 days ago

Why is law enforcement not paying for it? You know, as part of investigating the crime that took place.

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My first thought was whether this is the real problem. Giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, is this process when arranged by police covered, but if you pursue it yourself without charges not covered? I know nothing about this specific scenario but insurance companies love their paperwork and loopholes. If you don’t do their paperwork the way they want, they make sure to have a loophole

That is an amazing question that we should all be asking our state-level representatives.

Clearly, being a woman is a pre-existing condition.

ಠ_ಠ

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 61 points 3 days ago

Things like pregnancy or being a domestic violence victim were considered valid preexisting conditions until they passed Obamacare

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Republicans: “A woman’s job in life is to be pregnant.”

Public: “Ok so you’ll offer support for them, yea?”

Republicans: “Absolutely fucking not lol”

[-] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 17 points 3 days ago

How long until Americans make being alive a pre-existing condition

[-] Ziglin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I'll try and get a cure for it first.

[-] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago

Technically it is.

I'm not saying that should negate any coverage that you are otherwise entitled to.... Just that living is the root cause of many issues.

[-] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago

If wishes alone could kill, there wouldn't be a single health insurance executive alive within 24 hours.

I say just don't pay it. Let them threaten you all they want, they can't put you into collections for medical debt. Throw out their letters, block their collection numbers from calling you, don't give those slime balls a fucking penny.

[-] DillyDaily@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

It's not just about the money, seeing the UHC letter in your mailbox when you are not expecting it will bring back flashes of that night and that trauma.

It's like knocking on the door of a veteran at random intervals throughout the year too show them pictures of the war. It's dehumanising.

[-] rarbg@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

I never pay my medical debt lol. Under 200 won’t effect your credit btw so never pay bills under 200

[-] Anti_Face_Weapon@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago
[-] Veneroso@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

No, they absolutely put you in collections.

The debt falls off the credit report in several years.

It's also cleared by bankruptcy, and they can't go after your relatives for it, excluding your estate, and let's say that if you have medical debt, your estate probably isn't worth pursuing.

So fuck em.

Not legal advice.

[-] SpikedPunchVictim@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

They can not put you in collections (thank you, Biden). You can lose coverage, and have an opportunity to enroll in the same coverage on the next election cycle.

[-] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

The system is deeply broken in the USA.

Not all of the things that are broken about the system are making things worse for the civilians.
