I swear, if I hear about another openly queer (and also non-TERF) person opposing DIY HRT in the current sociopolitical climate, I am going to owe my landlord for minor property damages.

i.e. I am going to bang my head against a wall until I break through to the other side.

[-] Catoblepas 105 points 1 week ago

I don’t oppose DIY HRT in the slightest, I just wish that when people are talking about it there was a little more acknowledgment that DIY is a LOT more dangerous (legally) for people using testosterone.

There’s a lot of ‘just buy it online!’ which makes sense for estrogen, because as far as I know the only risk of importing that for personal use in the US is it getting confiscated by customs. In comparison testosterone is a schedule III drug, in the same class as ketamine and opium. Just possessing it without a prescription is a crime, and if someone even has more than a 30 day supply in some states they can end up in prison.

Tl;dr: DIY good, testosterone laws bad, please keep us trans men and trans mascs in your thoughts 😔

I always wondered about FtM DIY because of that. I know there are bodybuilder sites and overseas sites for it and generally people aren't getting prosecuted for having it. It just seems like something they'll start prosecuting in order to get to trans folks.

Am getting old cis man. Wish I could share the natural extra testosterone that causes testosterone-based problems. Best I can do is a high 5 for the bros. I'll bring it every time.

PS I know nothing about anyone's stash of testosterone they keep in their old prescription bottles.

balding guys sharing their testosterone like vampires opening their veins to welcome another into their fold

[-] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 15 points 1 week ago

Sorry, but the phrase "It's not gay when he sucks it out" popped into my head.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 1 week ago

i'm NOT a vampire i'm just sharing immortality with a bro, no hemo

[-] reptar@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

no hemo

Oh that's good

Don't worry, I will be there for you 🫡

I just wish it didn't come down to having to DIY your HRT. It saddens me greatly.

I'd be against it solely for the reason that it's safer when following an actual medical professional. But again, I'm saddened that it's not an option for so many people in other countries (I'm not American).

But I guess if your government won't support you, DIY is your only other option.

[-] weeeeum@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

There are valid health concerns with it. Oftentimes it's not inspected or approved by the FDA, and you are usually injecting it straight into your bloodstream. There are also conditions, that may have not yet been diagnosed that could make taking additional hormones dangerous.

Just be very well read concerning the literature, make sure you understand your body well (underlying conditions, potentially hereditary conditions too), ask for medical advice and try your best to buy from a reputable source or source FDA approved drugs.

I just googled DIY HRT without a VPN, wish me luck y'all

[-] seliaste 18 points 1 week ago

Commercial VPNs are scam and do not protect you. Tor does

[-] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago

Pretty sure security agencies have enough nodes to compromise tor. Try i2p.

[-] teije9 3 points 1 week ago

very dependant on the VPN. piracy communities have some great tier lists and reccomendations

Literally just get Tor Browser. It's just a browser like any other.

[-] teije9 9 points 1 week ago

yeah, its firefox with some privacy modifications and all your data gets send through 3 different computers before going to the website, basically just having 3 vpns on. you won't 'accidentally' find the dark web, nor will you have to be able to program to use it or anything. it's just a browser with an inbuilt triple vnp

[-] P4ulin_Kbana@lemmy.eco.br 4 points 1 week ago

Stop using Go##le, use SearXNG or 4get.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Can you or someone share what it is? I'm scared to google it now hahaha.

[-] MBM@lemmings.world 4 points 1 week ago

Do It Yourself Hormone Replacement Therapy, as in "I'm trans but the doctors won't help me transition so I'll have to do it myself"

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago

It's not ideal, but holy fuck, why would a queer person oppose it? If there is no better option, it's lifesaving!

[-] vonbaronhans@midwest.social 23 points 1 week ago

Unfamiliar with this particular discourse. Are they opposed to it because it's illegal? Or are they worried that it's dangerous because even most of us who did well in chemistry and biology in high school probably wouldn't feel comfortable doing it ourselves or trusting unregulated strangers?

[-] Kit 13 points 1 week ago

My initial concern is that HRT is a powerful substance requiring close monitoring by a doctor. Too much or too little can wreak havoc on your body. It's a delicate balance. Now if you're able to convince a doctor to monitor your levels and tell you if your dosage is correct, then I see no issue.

[-] Alice@beehaw.org 23 points 1 week ago

Then you have the opposite end of the spectrum, people who don't want you to talk about the legal risks because they think you're trying to discourage them.

Fight the power, but know what you're doing. That's how you minimize risk.

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Breaking Bad parody, but it's hrt.

[-] EmptySlime 5 points 1 week ago

Idk I feel like this would be more of a Boardwalk Empire kind of situation or similar since you've got different products for the enterprise to push. You've got T, E, puberty blockers, possibly underground surgery centers, people needing fake documents.

[-] Roflmasterbigpimp@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

NGL I would watch that

[-] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm not opposed to it because it's illegal, I'm opposed to it because sweet mercy you are going to poison yourself

[-] thesporkeffect@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Who is doing this?? Granted I am not on Twitter or bsky, but is this really a thing?

[-] celeste 6 points 1 week ago

All the based people already switched to mastodon/bluesky.

[-] ZombieMantis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The concern isn't legal, it's medical. Making your own medicine is incredibly dangerous.
