Can someone better versed in US politics give a quick rundown on how the fake electoral scheme actually works? I’m aware of the physical steps involved but I don’t see how the scheme doesn’t just fail at the first hurdle. In what world can a person not assigned as elector send in their own certificate and not be immediately disregarded? To my mind it sounds like this:

Mrs Krabappel: I’m the fourth grade teacher and have counted the votes for fourth grade class president. Martin Prince wins with 2 votes.

Miss Hoover: No, I’m the real fourth grade teacher and I declare that Bart Simpson wins with 2 votes.

Principal Skinner: There’s no way of discerning who the real fourth grade teacher is. My only option is to ignore the results of the vote and decide by fiat.

I thought I was being a reductionist but it seems from that article I might be closer to the truth than I thought. It's weirdly disappointing that it simply boils down to some childish tactic of pretending to be confused by the results, instead of there being some obscure legal precedent.

I can't get over the fact that the public, years old, widely known effort by R to steal our elections is itself called "stop the steal." Someone jump me to any other timeline, please!

No shit, they got a slap on the wrist last time.

[-] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 32 points 23 hours ago

Fucking fascist should of been hung. Biden had 4 Fucking years to protect our right to vote. They Fucking knew he was going do this. Hell they have been loud and proud of it. IF TRUMP STEALS THIS ELECTION I HOPE WE ARE READY TO RISE UP AND FIGHT BACK! ARE WE?

[-] Tyfud@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

How do you propose he does that when congress has actively been working against him the last 4 years and refuses to pass anything he's asked for.

And the SCOTUS will rule 6-3 against him for, literally, everything.

He couldn't even forgive student debt the way his powers should have let him, because of the Fascist SCOTUS taking the case and deciding that while president's do have dictator powers to kill whoever they want, they can't actually perform the duties of their office if it helps educate our youth in any way and prevent them from a life of crippling debt

General Strike can sometimes be the best thing for workers to do.

[-] AfricanExpansionist@lemmy.ml 4 points 19 hours ago

Yeah Democrats don't care if he wins...

[-] AfricanExpansionist@lemmy.ml 2 points 19 hours ago

But Democrats told me Trump is such a giant threat to democracy that we should all just show up and vote for them without hesitation after they spent three years doing nothing about his crimes

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 25 points 22 hours ago

One of the many myriad things I hate about Trump is that he’s made presidential election season even longer with this sort of shit.

Usually this ends and I can enjoy the holidays, but no, I have to hear abiut this shit until fucking January.

Fuck him.

With the now-totally-legal-thanks-to-SCOTUS voter purging, theft and destruction of ballots, aggressive voter suppression tactics, and polling that indicates an electoral college but not population vote win for Trump, they might not have to 'Stop the Steal' at all. They've "legally" pre-stolen it themselves.

Instead of being concerned what the Republicans might do if they lose, it might be worth wondering if everybody else should really take it lying down like they did the 2000 election.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 8 points 17 hours ago

Last time, "stop the steal" failed because there wasn't any actual election fraud to be found. This time, there will be actual election fraud to find, and plenty of it, because they will have committed it themselves. They will then use their own crimes as an excuse to claim the vote tallies are unreliable and throw out entire precincts worth of results in Democrat-leaning areas. This will result in a claimed Trump win of both the electoral college and the popular vote in a landslide, and the MAGA SCOTUS will rubber-stamp it.

[-] WoahWoah@lemmy.world 28 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

"Leave the door open"? It's literally their spoken and strategized plan for the election. How are things the Republicans have been loudly and obviously preparing for and putting in place for literally years "breaking news" days from the election? Democrats are so fucked.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 19 points 23 hours ago

Not just Democrats. The entire nation is fucked.

[-] WoahWoah@lemmy.world 14 points 23 hours ago

Oh cmon now. Don't be dramatic. Rich white guys will be OK. Like always.

[-] Intergalactic@lemmy.world 13 points 23 hours ago

Will election deniers be charged with the necessary crimes this time around?

[-] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 3 points 23 hours ago

I sure hope so. After all of this, if they are still sticking to crimes, and treason, they deserve a nice 'shady vacation'.

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

"Putting cases on all y'all!"

[-] tate@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 23 hours ago

I mean, Kamala runs the senate. They really don't have any option to try the same scheme again. I do worry though, what new tricks they might try.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 3 points 21 hours ago

They'll call for her to recuse herself or whatever, and Democrats have a history of caving to ridiculous demands of Republicans like that.
