genuinely thanks for making Hexbear an awesome queer-friendly space everybody. for all the "tankie" that gets thrown around, I still know I'm loved here.

"Don't hang out with these people, they're tankies!", the liberals in the walls told me, and an apparent 90% of my fellow anarchists concurred, "We do NOT fraternize with the tankies!"

Thus I hesitated, seeing the link to !chapotraphouse@hexbear.net appearing on my screen. My heart pounded; I felt like Indiana Jones about to swap the golden idol for a bag of sand. I knew that what I did next could haunt me for the rest of my life. Thoughts raced through my mind: what if I ended up in some sort of dreaded echo chamber and became one of... them?

— My stomach turned, but regardless, Lady Curiosity in that moment descended behind me. She grabbed my trembling hand, moved the mouse cursor over the link, and clicked it.

"What the fuck these people are all gay and based as hell"

How many oddly specific custom emojis do you people have?!

[-] Parsani@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hundreds

Edit: I think there used to be a github page with all of them, but I can't find it anymore

[-] HornyOnMain@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

Before federation I think someone mentioned it in the thread about creating the hexbear mastodon instance and it was like 1150 or so iirc but since we've federated they're being added constantly now so idk how many there are now

Just fork Lemmy if the mods are really so evil? Idk why people get so worked up about the politics of the authors of open source software. If the revolution ever comes, the software written by liberals will be very useful for Cybersyn 2.0

[-] ZoomeristLeninist@hexbear.net 54 points 1 year ago

the code is tankie! just using lemmy gives them power! the tankies are in the walls!

[-] Redcat@hexbear.net 42 points 1 year ago

the written word itself is tainted by the ideology of sumerian landlords

[-] MerryChristmas@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

Give me more of your thoughts, I'm into this shit.

The politics of the authors matters. The politics of the authors sets the project priorities, determines which features are essential and which features will never be implemented. Running a social media site is a commitment. It requires maintenance. It requires interaction with the developers to troubleshoot problems, fix bugs, add features, etc. I absolutely would not run a social media platform developed by fascists. That would put me in a position where I rely on fascists for technical support, where the fascists understand my own infrastructure better than I do. It would also mean that no features which undermine fascist ideology would likely be developed.

In addition to being a piece of tech, Lemmy takes on the form of its authors' politics. Despite them being Communists, this form is a vaguely anarcho-syndicalist one. A federation of autonomous communities. It is a form which allows each community to set their own standards and operate as they see fit. If one believes them to be the stereotypical censorious authoritarians, this should introduce some cognitive dissonance. If a person like this can look at the tech and appreciate the form, but then reject it because "tankies," it demonstrates a lack of understanding about the underlying problems. They can try to replicate the project in a "non-tankie" form, but they won't succeed unless they deeply analyze the landscape they are operating in. And if they did deeply analyze the landscape they are operating in, they would more-or-less arrive at the same conclusions as the Lemmy devs vis-à-vis the political economy of social media.

It's because liberals contribute nothing useful to society but are more than happy to steal and take credit for other people's hard work like the leeches they are.

The code for kbin was completely stolen from a trans women

Raddle it's what was stolen to make kbin

Raddle is open source. You literally cannot steal open source code (unless you violate the GPL, which kbin doesn't), open source code is meant to be borrowed.

[-] marx_mentat@hexbear.net 35 points 1 year ago

Getting mad at everything built using open source because stealing is wrong angery

[-] Odo@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Edit: It looks like the license issues has not been solved yet even though the author of postmill reported the issue about two months ago, for more info see here: https://raddle.me/f/fediverse/170274/a-reminder-that-kbin-is-still-violating-the-zlib-license-of

The original post is exaggerating (not all the Kbin code is stolen code), but the Kbin creator used code from a different open source project without any attribution, so for a while it was, to an extent, similar to "stolen code". ~~Last I checked, the issue was resolved ~amicably, the kbin person provided attribution, and the original creator was satisfied~~ (although I did read her say she was discouraged from continuing her project because she would have appreciated contributions to hers, instead of forking/not attributing).

[-] citrussy_capybara@hexbear.net 53 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

~~What is the source of this rumour? Can’t find anything online about stolen code from raddle in kbin. Both projects are open source so should be easy to prove.~~

Misleading. MinekPo1 found the discussion. The kbin dev had neglected to add attribution for some copied backend code. The postmill dev points it out with links, asks for attribution, gets an apology, is asked if the code can be used or needs to be rewritten, she explains how to fix the licensing and endorses use of the code with proper attribution.

The framing is overblown for maximum drama.

Update: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/pulls/937#issuecomment-1041941
Turns out Emma had to put a snarky comment, after two months of waiting, in a thread with a Free Software Foundation person offering financial assistance, to get this resolved.

[-] alexandra_kollontai@hexbear.net 39 points 1 year ago

First I'd hear of this. I looked at the source code of both repos (the raddle.me repo is called Postmill). There's no relation at all. Both repos have history going back at least a couple of years. Kbin says in the readme it is inspired - not based on - Postmill. But even if it was, they're both open source! The whole point of open source is that you can reuse other people's code to make your own thing!!!

anarcho-propertarians are a blight

[-] Odo@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Their discussion was two months ago, but the licencing issues have still not been solved.

[-] citrussy_capybara@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Thanks for the info.
edit: Since your comment it has been resolved.

[-] footfaults@hexbear.net 51 points 1 year ago

stolen from a trans woman

I fucking hate when people do this shit. Just accuse people of doing shit and throwing out a marginalized group as the "victim" to make their argument stronger. As others have pointed out it's open source, so it's not possible to "steal"

Fuck this disingenuous asshole

[-] FumpyAer@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

EdgyEmma's face when her open source project is forked:

surprised-pika

[-] radiofreeval@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

Apparently there was an issue with attribution that was resolved

[-] footfaults@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

Do you have a link so I can lean more?

raddle is the place where you go to find people calling r/completeanarchy radlibs tankies, oh and also the dude who runs it with his million sockpuppets having a conversation with himself

[-] radiofreeval@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

Raddle is cringe. Too bad they have good trans content.

Do-It-Yourself community does Cinderella act about the options already out there. Decides to just ask other people to do it for them instead. ironicat
