The weekend, and the rain, has arrived.

What are we all up to? Mourning the lack of sun? Happy for the rain? Still playing Tears of the Kingdom with the curtains closed?

No rain, but off to Manchester to see Mars Volta tonight so I'm sure I'll find loads of it there!

[-] kev@mcr.town 2 points 2 years ago

Hey, have fun in Manchester! You might be glad to know, I'm looking out my window and it's a bit overcast but doesn't feel rainy yet.

The Apollo's a great venue but I'm always disappointed by the lack of pubs nearby.

[-] hellothere@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

Aye tell me about it, nothing a few tinnys on the train can't solve though!

[-] Sausage@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago

We've got the local village "carnival" today, complete with overpriced fair in the park afterwards. I usually try to ignore it because I'm a grumpy old sod, but my eldest is walking in it with school so I have to be enthusiastic.

Currently out walking the dog in the fields. The sun's come out, the petrichor is in full swing, it's a lovely morning. We've seen a green woodpecker. Edit: dog rolled in fox poo. Boo

Off to a party to see some old friends later. Yay.

[-] Sausage@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Was this pre or post fox poo?

[-] sideone@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

This was post initial fox poo. He found some more later.

[-] Sausage@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

Love a good old bit of petrichor. Seems to trigger floods of nostalgia.

[-] kev@mcr.town 2 points 2 years ago

There's a word I had to look up and will now annoy everyone with as much as possible!

Also stirred a memory of a Terry Pratchet book from a scarily long time ago!

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago

The Last Continent! Great book, if one of the more outright nonsensically comedic ones.

[-] Sausage@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

I'm not certain but I suspect I probably learned it from a Discworld book, also a scarily long time ago!

[-] Ni@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

No rain here as of yet, and I don't mean to be miserable about the sun but we really need some rain!

Also off to the library to do crafts and get books out this morning, not sure what else today brings maybe prep for father's day tomorrow.

What are you up to?

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

Ooh what kind of crafts? Our library used to have a knit and natter, but it only happened at like 10am on a Wednesday so effectively banned working-age folks. And now even that is gone. Bah.

[-] Ni@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

It's a shame when there aren't outside of working time options. I often wonder when we are supposed to engage with all this stuff?

We have a kids craft on a Saturday at the library, my kid is currently making a paper fish. We take a lot of paper craft stuff home with us!

You might be able to find a knit and natter group on Facebook, I know there are some around us that do the post box toppers.

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Honestly I made one friend through Ravelry years ago, and that seems to be about it around here in terms of crafters who are under retirement age. Such is life in small towns! I think there is a lot more stuff for young kids on a weekend though, basically the demographic here is "parents" and "old people" and if you're neither you're out of luck!

At least there's online though. I'm loving seeing all the new crafty communities popping up on here, just hope they can get enough content to keep going 🤞

[-] Ni@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

You are absolutely right it does seem that more stuff is either parent or retirement age focused!

Have you found many good craft communities on the fediverse? I haven't seen much creative content on kbin so far?

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Not sure what you're into but....deep breath...you asked for it.

!lemmy_stitch@sh.itjust.works (direct link) is a brand new one for cross stitch & embroidery, needs more people to join!

!crochet@lemmy.ca (direct link) is the most active crochet one I've found, some nice convos happening in there already.

!knitting@lemmy.world (direct link) again there's a few but this seems most active.

For sewing there seem to be two trying to get off the ground but neither seem super active. I'll probably just pick one at random and start posting in it if that doesn't change but they're !sewing@lemmy.world (direct link) and !sewing@sh.itjust.works (direct link)

!leathercraft@lemmy.ca (direct link) isn't something I do personally but I do enjoy perving over their projects anyway.

Erm...if I find any more I'll come back and update this lol. Kind of one a one-woman mission to build a good list, then hopefully convince the various mods to sticky it so people who find one of these places can then find all the others too.

(Also p.s. I don't know how to format these links for Kbin so sorry if they don't work. But hopefully I've made it a bit easier for any other Lemmings who stumble across this comment.)

[-] Ni@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Oh my god, thank you for such a comprehensive list! I will be checking out each and every one of them a little later on.

I feel like everyone really t needs to pull together and try and build all these communities to get this whole place rolling. Thriving more niche communities are vital to that.

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Yep absolutely! I can't commit to running one myself but can at least do my part by being a patient explorer (and insufferable shill) of new communities lol.

Amazing thanks for posting those links. I'm trying to get into crochet at the moment and need all the tips I can get

Performing Carmina Burana with my choir this evening which should be fun. I am knackered though after an overnight jaunt to London so hoping I can sleep most of Sunday

[-] TeaHands@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Break a leg!

(do they say that to choir people or is it only for actors? idk, but you get the gist)

[-] wildeaboutoskar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Thanks! Hoping it cools down a bit before the performance, melting already

[-] Z_ford_prefect@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

No rain yet here, the garden could use it though

Going for a long dog walk then doing some woodwork in the garage

[-] JesusTheCarpenter@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

I promise that I don't complain when it's not as warm and overcast. Yes, a lot of rain it's not great especially in the winter.

I wanted to say that before I say that I hate the summer in UK. Why? Here are the reasons:

  1. I have a really bad hayfever. That means often choosing between baking at my home or opening the windows and blowing my brains out through my nose due to the allergy.

  2. Very few places have air-con. Especially homes, meaning it's really hot and not much can be done about it. Also, when at work, it's annoying when it's so hot. It's nice when you are at the beach but this brings me to the next point.

  3. The weather is unreliable. It can be hot as fuck the whole week and then when you go to the beach it's cold and windy.

[-] Ainsey11@lemmy.nerdcave.us 7 points 2 years ago

Honestly sometimes aircon is a curse too - we bought one of those portable units, it's great and turns our bedroom baltic but if you forget to turn it off you wake up with a really bad cotton mouth and an electric bill that makes you question your life choices

[-] wildeaboutoskar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

It's the humidity that I hate the most. It makes everything more difficult.

[-] GreyShack@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

No rain here. Apparently there might be this evening or, if not, then on Tuesday or Thursday...

Hopefully, I will be picking up some garden furniture today though, so that should prompt it.

Otherwise, we have now moved in for long enough that all the things that "will do for now" are becoming a bit of a nuisance, so those are my target for today.

[-] Cevilia 4 points 2 years ago

Still mourning the lack of rain down here. Met Office is 80% sure we might get some tomorrow though!

[-] mannycalavera@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

No rain but a pleasant drop in the temperature and a nice breeze. I might instead wait for the post to not show up for the fifth consecutive day 🥲.

[-] matt@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Getting a new mattress delivered today - actually so excited for this because my current one has got to a stage where the springs are starting to come up through the surface which stabs me whenever I lay in the "wrong place" in bed.

So ready for cozy sleep again.

[-] matt@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Well, this didn't age well, supposedly the company (Dreams) came to my house around 08:30, but I didn't hear any sort of knocking, and supposedly they also phoned me to try and get my attention and it went straight to voicemail - which makes no sense, because my phone was not off and I got a text around the same time from them saying my delivery had failed!

Managed to get a full refund on the whole thing, as their next delivery slot was 1st July which I wasn't waiting for, and begrudgingly had to get a mattress from Amazon if I wanted a new one this weekend.

[-] kev@mcr.town 1 points 2 years ago

Funnily enough, we got a new mattress recently (it's amazing after the ill-advised rolled up foam one we've been using for years) and also had a crap experience with Dreams. We ended up at Benson's and they were great

Woke up to rain, which is a shame as I didn't put the patio chair cushions away last night. So much for having breakfast in the garden again. The house is still like the 10th circle of Dante's Inferno, and one of my cats has vomited on the staircase.

[-] Munkiesox@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Sadly, we have no rain here. The lawn remains parched.

I will be trying to find the motivation to thoroughly clean the house. Since it's still hotter than Mount Doom in here, it'll likely be a feeble attempt, then continuing with what is probably close to my 50th Skyrim playthrough.

[-] LillianVS@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Thank fuck! I will embrace the cold showers on my sun burnt flesh. I am so done with this heat. Fans are not enough.

It's time to out and do a bit of shopping run a few important errands in preparation for my new job... Buy a giant dragon plush like my sister got. It looks really cute but I want to dye him so he is different. I am a big child at heart lol

[-] kev@mcr.town 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Got a long weekend since the US based company I work for has given us all Juneteenth off. This means I will be heading for the pub as soon as is socially acceptable!

If it does rain, by the way, it's my fault. New patio set arrived last night.

And tomorrow, yep, more Tears of the Kingdom will definitely be happening!

[-] TeaHands@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Absolutely no obligations today other than to avoid getting dressed, eat snacks, and lounge around on the couch doing whatever tf I want. Which is mostly gonna be game dev and crochet, I think. Maybe a bit of sewing if I can be arsed to get off said couch and go upstairs, but that seems unlikely.

No rain due here til tomorrow night but it is at least much cooler today so I'll take it!

No rain here yet but I don't think it's far away! I think I'll be doing a mix of some cleaning, gardening and fixing the winch on one of my landrovers if it stays dry out there

[-] juniper@feddit.uk 2 points 2 years ago

No rain here as yet, but it could be arriving soon. Probably go for a walk after lunch. Maybe watch the Stuttgart semifinal.

[-] PhyrneRocks@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Sunny and 90 degrees. Floated around in the pool with some cocktails. Perfect day.

[-] SpiralCompass@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

90 degrees?!

[-] mdwhite999@vlemmy.net 2 points 2 years ago

I yelled at Nazis until they ran away with their tails between their legs. Was a very fun day

[-] _pete_@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

No rain yet, hopefully it’ll be great when it comes.

We have a 5 year old so naturally it’s a birthday party this weekend, should be fun though.

Also, looking forward to my possible lie-in for Father’s Day tomorrow 😊

[-] rubikfrog@feddit.uk 2 points 2 years ago

Edinburgh calling. No rain.
