OutOfTheLoop would be amazing. Sometimes I just want a TLDR of a current topic.
I really miss a place like MensLib. Just to be clear, that’s not Men’s Rights or any of the MRA bullshit. It’s a space for men like the feminism community where men can discuss issues, support each other, and learn without taking up space in other forums like feminism or witchesvspatriarchy.
Not that those spaces exclude men. It’s just that in order for the patriarchy to be dismantled, men have to take and active role to work on ourselves and not at the expense of women or other groups using their own spaces to support each other. Likewise, anyone would be welcome in a menslib community.
I just really miss that place to practice and encourage positive masculinity, and to rally to fight the patriarchy.
I used to lurk on that sub even though I'm not the target audience. It was so nice to see the men checking in on each other's mental health and posting positive articles.

Something I haven't seen mentioned is an alternative to /r/BuyItForLife - I'm often looking for honest thoughts and reviews of products from real people, but it feels silly to pop into !chat and ask what bike pump or jean brand or whatever people recommend.
Yesss, if we're going to make lemmy anywhere as useful as reddit was, it needs to have user reviews.
A community for interesting facts like r/todayilearned.

As much as I love the chat I’ve seen and had over at !entertainment@beehaw.org, I feel like we need to separate things out into discrete Movies and Television communities for increased specificity and better discussions. Right now there’s a lot of links flying around but it feels a bit front-page-of-Deadline-y mixed with some discussion posts.
There have been many options already, but I'll add:
- Internet Is Beautiful
Just a place to share small sites of the internet that you might not discover easily by yourself.
Shame this happened while 'most' of us Europeans were asleep.
How about a crafts community? We have DIY but crafts are a bit different. It could cover stuff like sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, dying, woodburning, pottery, glassblowing, all the artsy 3D items people make.
Travel
Language/linguistics
Careers/work
I know there's the Creative community, but I'd enjoy if there were some more specific ones. Maybe Art (for drawing, painting, digital art), Crafts (for crochet, embroidery, etc.), and Photography?
maybe a community thats a focused on being positive rather than negative, news or generally content wise. like, /c/cute stuff/aww or /c/good news. just generally a space to try and take a break from the negativity, not to ignore the problems in the world but rather a break from the kind of doomscrolling that tends to happen on social media and a space to share general means of hope.
Definitely in favor of a "good news" type of community, but only if the news is actually good. r/upliftingnews turned into r/orphancrushingmachine very quickly
A c/Tabletop would be nice, for boardgames/card games (Magic etc)/D&D and stuff. Right now this falls under "gaming", but that community is heavily slanted towards video games (it even has a game controller as it's icon). I feel tabletop games are different enough and have different enough communities irl to be worth their own space
I quite like the idea of a BeeHawDevs community, I'm not sure if there's a discord or something already but having a community specifically dedicated to building new features for BeeHaw would be nice I think. Since we'd all have to juggle things around jobs and stuff it would be nice if there was a centralised list of tasks/features that needed doing in order of priority that people could drop in and work on when they had a spare weekend.

People can go post when they are in the mood of wanting a community that doesn't exist. Others can comment on it. If a big group of people are talking about a certain thing it might be more viable. Or, you might find out that there is a community like the one you are looking for already.
Also people can make more in depth threads like about what kind of vibe/guidelines they are thinking of and have discussion about what others would like to participate in.
It would serve as a record of what people have wanted. Would be useful both to show interest over time but also to think about communities that might have significant conflicts in expectations.
Having something for IT professionals would be huge. There’s a big difference in professional tech and everyday technology. It’s a wide range of topics, but networking, server administration, security, device management, Helpdesk, and IT management can all be summed up together inside professional IT. It would be a good place to ask for help, get ideas, and catch up on the latest news and trends.
r/ifyoulikeblank always was cool. Basically suggestions of cool things that are similar to someting you promt because you already enjoy it. Does not matter what it is music, films, games, websites, weird shit, everything goes.
Some kind of Horror sub (for all things horror film/game related, paranormal stuff?)
I personally would like a game development subr- community, but it might be too niche to bother with. I know we have a c/programming, but that's for people a lot smarter than me, my game dev process is more of a "alls i have is a hammer and therefore everything is nails" type of deal and I personally find that most of the self taught indie devs are kinda on my wavelength.
Sustainability/zero-waste communities! I loved those on reddit because they were more about suggestions and practices for sustainable, low-impact living, rather than general environmental news.
Edit: also Fixing/mending! A place for things like visible mending projects.
Sobriety.
What about a series of local communities? Back on Reddit, I enjoyed participating in a subreddit for my local area. I don't think Lemmy is quite there just yet (but hopefully one day will have enough users to support such localized communities), so how about a series of US State communities? Depending on intentional presence, this could be expanded into equivalent regions for other countries as well.
Podcasts.
I'm late to the party but one of my favorite places on Reddit was MomForAMinute, where people could stop by and share their news or vent or talk about whatever they need to and get internet Mom Hugs. It was such a wholesome place.
As general feedback I mostly like the less is more until posting volume on the more general categories you have gets too big. That said the feedback I have is as follows.
- First "World News" in the list above is the big missing thing.
- "Health" and "Legal" is pretty weak on the whole fediverse. There may be legal reasons for this but there you have it. I did sign up for https://beehaw.org/c/health@midwest.social .
- "Travel" is missing, and it is also not common on the fediverse either unless I missed something.
- "Fidiverse" is a common topic you see people asking about. Currently I guess this goes under "Chat" and "Support" now. Also I signed up for https://beehaw.org/c/fediverse@midwest.social which seems nice. Maybe that is fine or maybe we should have this topic. I do not know.
The area that is a bit odd is the IT area. We have just "Operating Systems", "Free and Open Source Software" and "Programming". It is not clear where you'd ask anything else. For example:
- "Tech Support"
- "Hardware". Like Phones, Printers, you name it.
- "Networking and Telecom".
- "Privacy and Security".
I do not know what the topics should be, but the ones you have are strangely specific when the rest of the site uses nice general topics. Maybe there should be some quality thinking here.
For those that care, the two privacy and security communities I found were:
The other thing I would say is that we probably do not need to have every sort of community. That is the whole point of the Fediverse. So if there is a good Fediverse alternative why add it unless we have a very good reason. Might be good to have a guide of where to find the omitted communities too. Might be even better if Lemmy software itself had a "link" capability in "Communities" so every Lemmy site did not need to add every sort of Community.
Anyway my probably too long and detailed feedback. Generally I think less is more and let us all use the Fediverse where we can.
If you got this far thanks for humoring me. Also thank you all for this site, and for joining this site.
I personally have been thinking about health for a long time, I work in healthcare and share a lot of articles in humanities or science depending on how technical the writing is or the scope of what's being investigated. Having a health community would make it pretty unambiguous.
Making sure it's explicit these are places for greater discussion and not personal help are probably things we'll need to do with these spaces tho
Haven't seen a lesbian specific community here that isn't just porn. r/ActualLesbians had it's issues, but it more or less worked.
I would love to see a birds
or birding
community.
Could we have something specifically for Apple people?

Fantasy/Sci-Fi
I've seen a few suggestions of witchy stuff, paganism, or witches vs patriarchy. So maybe just a "New Age" community that deals with paganism, wiccan, astrology, crystals, etc.
Doesn't have to be called that exactly, but I think it would be better to group that rather than a plethora of smaller communities with less traffic?
Mushroomgrowers/mycology (there's mycology@mander.xyz, but it'd be nice to have one focused on growing)
Pseudoscience/skeptics (for discussions scientific skepticism, the skeptic community, and shows like SGU, ONWRAC, etc.)
Whatsthisplant/whatsthisbug/etc. (For identification purposes)
myog (for diy outdoors gear)
Startups/indiehackers (for those wanting to start small, self-sustained businesses)
Retro/decades which would include posts, pictures and nostalgia from the eras we grew up in to recall/remind us of those special times that meant something to us.
My only suggestion is to be mindful of growing too fast. I would focus on more general interest communities at this point. Better to have a few highly active groups then hundreds of dead ones.
AMA
- Witchcraft and/or Paganism - Absolutely needs representation. Maybe to make it more general and allow for other religions as well it could be called "Spirituality"?
- Keto
- Stitchcraft/Needlecraft as a subboard of Creative.
Thank you for considering suggestions!
I'd really like Entertainment to have subcommunities for Movies, TV, and Streaming.
- news from anything but the usa, that's sorely needed.
- a general photography community, both for discussion and showing pictures off.
- something along the lines of /r/mealtimevideos.
