Well sure, they're too busy arresting people acting against the destruction of our planet and human rights, and otherwise oppressing the working class. That's what they exist for.

They exist to prevent crime and to catch criminals.

Nobody suffers more at the hands of crime than the working class.

The rich are safe and sound in their gated communities and penthouses with private security. It's the working class who have to deal with this sort of shit.

They exist to prevent crime and to catch criminals.

They really really don't, never have done.

Nobody suffers more at the hands of crime than the working class.

Why do you think that is? There's a reason cops are called class traitors

The rich are safe and sound in their gated communities and penthouses with private security.

Right, and the police is the private security of the state, there to defend it and its interests (and those of the rich who actually call the shots, it isn't private police arresting anti-oil protestors, in defence of the interests of the oil industry for example), not you and yours.

PLEASE tell me... How... HOW do cops "prevent" crime when they only show up AFTER a crime has been committed? It's like you people never think about a damn thing you just parrot and parrot. Sad.

I just wish we weren’t the ones paying for it. If you’re gonna oppress do it on your own damn dime.

No argument there - defund the police. The money is desperately needed elsewhere, places where it will actually benefit society like social services, health and especially mental health services, youth services, housing services and so on and so forth, even forensic services, who would actually solve crimes (which would be significantly reduced if peoples needs were better met) instead of police poor communities and defend rich ones.

E: but that would never happen of course, because the state and those who are behind it need us hungry and tired and fighting with each other because it keeps us from turning on them.

At least they have cameras everywhere!

[-] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 20 points 3 months ago

The dependency on mass surveillance is probably a major reason why they can't solve anything.

Don't worry. I guarantee they'll push for everything from encryption backdoors to microchipping the entire population, before they ever go back to legitimate meatspace detective work — and I'm mostly-sure Labor will pass what whatever they want without much pushback... Prove me wrong Labor! I double-dystopia dare ya!

If the cameras don't help we should be taking them down....right? RIGHT!?!?

My wife reported a hate crime the other day and the police initially wouldn't even record it because she wasn't the victim. She had to make the case very strongly that actually they have to record every report.

(It was a taxi driver leaning out his window and screaming slurs at two black women crossing the road)

Well they’re not going to dob themselves or their colleagues in now, are they?

Met Police should be disbanded and a new police force needs to be created instead. Met is institutionally racist and failed to change its culture on number of occasions.

General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(
