The right has been scapegoating Mexico over the ongoing opiod crisis and Fentanyl specifically
Doesn't all this fentanyl come from China who is famously allied with Republican's favorite leader, Putin?
It doesn't "all" come from any one country, but China produces the most, yes.

I think it is a ploy by Russia and China to get the US to hurt itself.
Mexico is key to our economic future. The manufacturing which the US is trying to onshore needs many different inputs some from lower cost labor sources. Mexico provides some of the middleish parts of the process (yes Mexican labor is more skilled than other inputs from South Asia). While the US labor pool provides the upper end. Cars, appliances, low end electronics etc. are where Mexico comes in. The US just doesn’t have the labor pool to do all of this at a decent price point.
While central and southern Mexico may not be big fans of the US. People in the North are fairly pro USA as they see a lot of economic integration. Dropping bombs on them even when we are going after the cartels is not going to keep them on our side and we will see the anti US sentiment take over the country.
It’s basically one of the few extremely dumb things we could do to royally fuck up our economy.

Let's face it, they will be. As a non American I'm wondering how I can convince our nation to further distance itself from the US as I just don't think they are a partner we should be too tightly coupled to; they're displaying all the signs of an empire on the edge of implosion.
As a European, It's crazy how I've started to compare USA to Russia. I mean, Russia is still the baddies by a decent margin, but god damn, that gap could be closing fast in 2025.

When did the US change from America first policy? It’s been the same since its inception!

It's not the policy, it's where that slogan comes from:
They bought their own propaganda that America's worldwide military presence is not for it's own benefit but out of a noble desire to protect democracy or whatever.
