Oh fuck. I didn't know this was around the same time. I literally tell everyone about how shit FB is and this proves it 1000x.

If you have a daughter or are a daughter, you should hate meta. They're inspiring a generation of self hating women and they have the data to prove it.

[-] milady@lemmy.world 29 points 1 year ago

Where does it say that in the article ? I wholeheartedly believe """meta"'" would do that, but I didn't see it mentionned here.

[-] A2PKXG@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

Do people even still use Facebook?

[-] Saneless@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Kids hate it but they love Instagram

My gf (not a kid) is proud how she hasn't used FB in a year but she's on Instagram every day

Same Zuck shit

I deactivated for 4 years. Then I decided to see what people were up to, and I discovered my local Buy Nothing group and a number of groups for my action figure collecting, and those are honestly worth it for me. I did my best to limit what data I’m giving them, but not only do they make it Byzantinely difficult, other software keeps selling them my info. My ads were slightly less targeted for a couple of weeks, then reverted back to being scarily targeted. That said, while I hate the privacy issues, I really like the groups. Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

he knows we still call it facebook, right? like only propagandists call it 'meta'.

[-] froh42@lemmy.world 49 points 1 year ago

Of course he knows, don't think these people are stupid. Still it limited the amount of news about the Facebook Papers by giving the press something else to write about. This post proves it even more.

And yet in the long run, they can make the name Meta stick, just by behaving like the renaming was a huge success and just ignoring everyone who calls the whole company Facebook.

If you like it or not over time Facebook will be just one of their brands, also probably not even the most attractive one.

[-] Humanius@lemmy.world 37 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They don't care whether you call it Facebook or Meta.
All they care about is that enough people were talking about the name change, so that they were distracted from the real controversy (which is the "Facebook Papers" revalations)

[-] rambaroo@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Seriously? How are you not getting the point of this article?

[-] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 76 points 1 year ago

Ya know what? He’s not wrong. I forgot about that for a while. I hate him a more now because it worked.

[-] rambaroo@lemmy.world 72 points 1 year ago

I can't imagine willingly working for a company this openly evil. Imagine sitting through an all hands like this.

Some software engineers are fine with temporarily casting aside their morals in exchange for a north of 200k USD salary.

[-] Jim@ani.social 4 points 1 year ago

I mean you gotta eat. I dont work for meta but for an industry that is probably scum. I think what I do adds value to it being less evil. I also do the bare minimum and they pay me so I think thats a win-win.

[-] oce@jlai.lu 6 points 1 year ago

Software engineers can find high paying jobs easily, they can choose. Unless they want to eat caviar at every meal.

[-] Holyginz@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Thats a very broad statement that is only true for some software engineers

It wasn't a success because of that. People just don't care about the Facebook Papers and the Twitter exposes.

They either already suspected it, and this just confirms it, or they don't give a fuck, they just want a place to post inane statuses and talk to people, because it's social media.

Sadly they are sheep and they never will wake up.

[-] FarceMultiplier@lemmy.ca 40 points 1 year ago

Makes me wonder what absolute horrors Elon is getting ahead of, with Twitter's rename.

[-] ChewTiger@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

That is a good point worth considering.... Though I just think he wants to shove some Fintech in there and thinks the name X is "cool".

[-] Grant_M@lemmy.ca 38 points 1 year ago

Boycott META. Boycott billionaires.

Not being a Facebook user and only seeing some mentions of FB/Meta in thread like this I can confirm I haven't heard of the Facebook Papers. It rings a bell about some privacy violation stuff, but not a big one.

[-] doppelgangmember@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago

Jokes on him, the app is still called Facebook on my Android!

[-] tenitchyfingers@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

Ever heard the criticism about some movie villains being “comically evil and unrealistic”? Well, tell those critics you’re sorry. Like even the MCU villains are realistic enough at this point. Matter of fact, Obadiah Stane is the perfect representation of one of these evil motherfuckers. That’s why he’s the scariest villain in the whole franchise.

[-] synae@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 1 year ago

Wasn't there a recent James Bond movie about some guy controlling the water supply, which was less bad than an actual dictator's plan?

[-] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

Sounds like Quantum of Solace
