Russian president delivered the warning after Seoul announced it would consider arming Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday warned South Korea that sending lethal weapons to Ukraine would be a “big mistake.”

His comments come after Seoul announced it would consider arming Ukraine in response to Russia and North Korea signing a mutual defense pact on Wednesday.

“If South Korea supplies weapons to Ukraine, it will not like the answer. I hope they won’t do it, it would be a big mistake,” Putin said at a press conference in Vietnam, where he is conducting a two-day state visit aimed at deepening strategic cooperation.

Putin pledged military aid to South Korea's greatest enemy, but then throws a hissy fit when South Korea considers military aid fir Ukraine in response. I'm sick of seeing the world being run by idiotic toddlers.

Like most tyrants, they purge critical minds and leave yes men. It increasingly skews their perception of reality and leaves them to think they're far smarter than they really are. Putin is so fucked lol.

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 83 points 3 months ago

Yeah huge mistake, just look at what's happened to all the other countries that did!

Yes, South Korea wouldn:t want to ruin their friendship with their neighbors in the North. You know the ones always sending them gifts

[-] Zehzin@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

Ballons full of shit a fair exchange to unsolicited K-Pop tbh

[-] stephen01king@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

It's not. You don't have to play the K-Pop USB sticks, but you sure as hell can't avoid smelling the shit NK drops on your house.

At this point he should just shut up. If Putins tells someone to not do something it is very likely that it is the exact thing they ought to do.

[-] mindlight@lemm.ee 45 points 3 months ago

Putin warns...zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 40 points 3 months ago

Sort of like how it would be a big mistake if NATO armed them.

And then NATO armed them.

[-] kwomp2@sh.itjust.works 40 points 3 months ago

Oh god please no, please don't escalate this war by adding the killer kind of weapons to it

[-] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 32 points 3 months ago

Bark bark bark

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 31 points 3 months ago

If South Korea does this, he'll tell his fat buddy Kim to send more shit balloons over the border.

[-] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

Eww, shit balloons.

[-] sebsch@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 3 months ago

When Putin says it will be a mistake, it's probably a very good idea 💡

[-] Rakonat@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

It would be a mistake to send this amount of material. We should double the shipment. Hell, triple it.

[-] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

I'm sure China would be thrilled if Russia started WWIII on their border.
But let's be honest though, world war III started 3 years ago and as of right now there are currently 9 more active conflicts going on worldwide than the peak of world war II, but no one is going to call it a world war until the superpowers are in direct conflict with each other.

[-] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 28 points 3 months ago

World wars don't start until the superpowers are in direct conflict. That's what defines a "World War". There are always multiple conflicts going on around the globe.

Are you really putting the regional conflicts occuring today in the same category as World War II, where over 70,000,000 people were killed? "World War III started 3 years ago" is the stuff of a conspiracist's fever dream and is not based in any objective reality

[-] Womble@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

On the other hand ww2 arguably started with Japan's invasion of China in 1937. So it is possible that the Ukraine conflict is the opening stages of ww3, but say it definitely is the start of ww3 is way overstating it.

[-] protist@mander.xyz 6 points 3 months ago

The Ukraine invasion is totally different though, the international community has already been involved for years and the front lines are more or less static at this point. What Japan did in China...no one stopped them and they kept going all over the Pacific. Another difference was Japan and Germany being formidable powers, Russia is nothing of the sort today, and China is smart enough to stay away

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

Agreed, WW2 scale became crazy because Japan and Germany were just allowed to conquer so much so fast before a meaningful response. Russia is being held to a much tighter theater from the onset.

[-] Archelon@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

I agree that seeing the current regional conflicts as the opening shots of WWIII is a bit hyperbolic, but I also think a much better comparison is the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 and the related July Crisis considering how the major powers are being lead through proxy conflicts into “a series of interrelated diplomatic and military escalations.”

[-] praise_idleness@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 months ago

We'll send them bitchin' weapons then.

[-] ax_xa@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Don’t make us send the gnarly weapons!

[-] ms_lane@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Or the weapons of Ultraviolence.

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

That guy is still alive? Do I have to go there my self and build a 5 story building with precarious under engineered balconies?

[-] Axeman666@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 months ago

Seriously dude, it seems no one in Russia has any balls. I was told Russia was a country in despair. Where are all the suicidal folk with a chip on their shoulder?

[-] Rakonat@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

This is how dictators exist. The valuables they are stealing from their country get reinvested not just to their personal enrichment but also enriching those people key to keeping them in power, from bodyguard to security departments that spend most of their time monitoring citizens for wrong think.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

The amount of times I've seen the headline "Putin tells [/Insert_Country] that [/Insert_UkraineAid] would be a 'big mistake'"...

[-] arran4@aussie.zone 9 points 3 months ago

That's a ... really well defined threat...

[-] mechoman444@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

O no! Watch out y'all! Putin is warning people again! He might invade a country for no reason and start commiting war crimes and genocide... ... ... ...

Wait...

[-] alphacyberranger@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago

Now now you old fart, let's get you back to bed

[-] mkwt@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Big Smoke, you make big mistake.
