Newbie question, but suppose more than one player has a copy of [[Long List of the Ents]] on the battlefield. Can you note a creature type that has already been noted by an opponent?

The rules text could stand to be more explicit about this, I think. You can't note a creature type that's already been noted for that copy of Long List of the Ents. You can note a creature type that's already been noted for another Long List, regardless of who controls it.

So say you control four copies of Long List. You can note "Treefolk" one time for each of them, but you can't note "Treefolk" more than once for any of them. Same if every player controls a Long List. Everyone can note "Treefolk" once for their own copy.

Ooh, I hadn't considered what would happen if you controlled two or more copies - thanks for clarifying that!

Note that the rules text doesn't say "noted for ANY Long List of the Ents" it just says "Long List of the Ents". A strict interpretation of the English concludes that each instance of the cards has its own "list:.

This interpretation is supported by the Comprehensive rules as well. See here:

201.5. Text that refers to the object it's on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects.

This is how cards normally function in Magic. See an exception that proves the rule: Cylian Sunsinger

Makes sense - thanks!
