I noticed the new betas have the ability to upload video clips. I think this has been a huge missing feature that Reddit and other social media platforms have

This could kill off smaller instances since they don't have the ressources to support that much data. The biggest german instance already has problems because they exceeded their server capacity if I remember correctly. Are there any mechanisms to stop that from happening?

Just turn off video uploads in the db? They’re already off by default, so you can activate them now if you want.

Yeah, the news made me wince. We're only a medium-sized instance but our image folder is already large and unwieldy. Throwing in video would bloat it quickly.

I can't see (m)any instances going with this or they'd need terabytes of storage.

I recommend always using things like imgur as a host for Pictures and Videos. Your admins will thank ya!

Do you think so? I usually use gifs from catbox.moe, it's pretty reliable as a hosting platform, I'm not sure having videos uploaded directly to Lemmy would be that much of a change

I've had issues with catbox, specifically it doesn't convert videos if they're incompatible with your browser. Firefox doesn't support H.265 for example.

That's strange, I always check the gifs in catbox, they always play. Do you see the example I listed below?

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah, that one does. I think it's very dependent on what's been uploaded.

They might even have fixed it now.

[-] Blaze 3 points 8 months ago

That might be it, let's hope!

I mean, gifs will always play, they're from like 1995. H265 is a whole newer and noticeably heavier thing.

[-] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 8 months ago

That's what I thought too but apparently on Safari it can be an issue

...Huh. One learns new stuff every day!

[-] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 8 months ago

Will it be federated with PeerTube in some way?

[-] Blaze 4 points 8 months ago

We are already federated with Peertube, sometimes the synchronization is a bit tricky

[-] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Will video posts on Lemmy be able to be viewed using PeerTube as an interface?

[-] Blaze 4 points 8 months ago

Ah, I see what you mean. I thought you meant that PeerTube content could be followed from Lemmy, which is already the case.

About your question, I don't know.

[-] Mr_Mofu 1 points 8 months ago

Oh wow, when is it estimated to release?
