You don't even have to do it in a "normal" way. In fact, in a game store, just saying, "those dice look cool" would be enough.
Roll20.net has some free games you can join. I'd suggest 5e to start, and using 5e.tools for looking stuff up
for someone who doesn't know D&D, dungeons and dragons will likely sound very scary
