And then Jesus showed up and said, and I quote, "...if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell." But in Aramaic, I guess.

Problem with sexy ladies? Not their problem.

[-] M0ty@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago

Gouging you eye is exactly quitting gym in this context. If going so specific place causes you to stumble, don't go to that place.

[-] Z4rK@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

To be fair, he said they would be thrown to the Valley of Hinnom. Not the nicest of places, sure, but not literally a fiery hell.

[-] woop_woop@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Well...that valley is also referred to as the one with the unquenchable fire.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Are you talking about the one in modern day Turkmenistan? Cause Hinnom is southwest of Jerusalem near Mount Zion.

Dude, just go home and have a wank like a normal weirdo.

[-] DannyMac@lemmy.world 23 points 7 months ago

He most likely does and posting to social media is his way to pay penance and make himself feel superior to his peers.

[-] interrobang 13 points 7 months ago

He's gotta make sure you know the real villain!

It's not his wandering eyes, it's the immodest harlots not following rules.

I feel like I read something about plucking out wandering eyes... Hmm must be from some obscure atheist text.

[-] TheFriar@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago

Well that’s their mental back handspring with a twist they do: wandering eyes are sinful, and they are good Christians, they don’t want their eyes to wander because, again, they’re “good Christians.” So if they don’t want their eyes to wander, and god doesn’t want their eyes to wander, it’s the filthy harlots in their “immodest dress” that are the problem.

Not the religion that has brainwashed them into thinking human sexuality is perverse and made them have full on diarrhea mouth.

Every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great. If a sperm is wasted, God gets quite irate.

Or just jerk off before you go to the gym

[-] Etterra@lemmy.world 96 points 7 months ago

Just remember that these are the kind of people that believe that without the word of God to dictate morality to humanity that literally everyone would be a murdering, raping, cannibalistic monster. They literally cannot understand that people can be good without the fear of eternal damnation looming over them at all times.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 7 months ago

Repeating myself, but the jackass who made Supersize Me had a short-lived tv show where people of opposing backgrounds swapped lives. The christian nutter went to live with Muslims and talked about how if you don't get your values from the bible, he can't imagine what you must believe.

You're spot on with this comment. They absolutely have an inability to think outside the confines of their own mental prisons. I'm sure that even pre-language proto-humans could discern morality and whether their actions were justified or not, even if unable to articulate the concept.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

A lot of non huma animals are able to understand that their actions have a good or bad impact on others. Those people rank very low on evolutionary scale.

While I think the whole thing is yikes, I think in this instance he’s referring to caving in to masturbation/porn, not rape… I hope.

I’m really naive and thought he just meant starring.

The "before I cave in" remark is probably just about failing the "avert my eyes" thing and looking at the women in the Mat 5:28, committing adultery in your heart kind of way. From a Catholic perspective OOP's concerns are completely reasonable as even thinking about sex too hard is supposed to send you to the forever torture zone. I doubt this guy is a hair trigger away from committing SA but the situation is disturbing in a few other ways

Source: am ex-cradle-Catholic and read all the stuff about sexual morality

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 7 points 7 months ago

even thinking about sex too hard is supposed to send you to the forever torture

Except for the part where literally any crime imaginable can be forgiven if you repent and believe in Jesus. Which kinda makes all the different rules Christianity imposes on its adherents completely moot.

[-] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 3 points 7 months ago

Level 0 Christians learn it and it should make sense to you too, it's not about punishment, it's your own choice to break the rules

Nothing in the bible says to enforce shit on others, in fact to stop doing that is preached everywhere in it

[-] Drivebyhaiku@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

Yeah the "thought crime" aspects of some religions seems to be incredibly damaging. Like your brain is not fully under your control. Thought is a messy place. Treating it as an evil to always be expunged and rigidly controlled tends to translate into some pretty toxic behaviours or at the very least an erosion of self worth.

[-] EssentialCoffee@midwest.social 4 points 7 months ago

I feel I had a very different Catholic upbringing because I don't find this reasonable from a Catholic perspective at all.

[-] Gumbyyy@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

That's the thing - there are Catholics, and then there are Catholics.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 46 points 7 months ago

The really insidious part of the Christian mythology is that it takes your most basic dive as a species to procreate and tells you it's a sin. And of course, the only cure for that sin is the church that told you it is a sin.

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.world 38 points 7 months ago

"before i cave in" get this man on a list before he hurts someone fr

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 34 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

He's talking about things like lust, or masturbation, not assaulting someone. Thoughts that you consider normal, are things that religious people struggle with.

[-] chatokun@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

I literally hated myself if I got horny enough to masturbate, usually upwards to half a year of repressing myself. I refused to pursue romantic relationships, considering myself not good enough, despite others showing very direct interest.

I'm much mentally healthier out of it.

"cave in"

Like are we talking flirting or rape? Or masturbation?

Do we have to call the authorities (Jesus) on his ass?

[-] wheeldawg@sh.itjust.works 11 points 7 months ago

Clearly before he stares at them and gets a boner that's difficult to hide.

If thy right eye offend thee, bitch at strangers, for it is their fault for making you want to sin and not your fault for sinning

---Republican Matthew, 5:29-30

[-] venoft@lemmy.world 18 points 7 months ago

At least he's not putting the blame on the others.

It's fine if you want to go somewhere modest, just don't make other people dress modest because you want to go there.

[-] Olgratin_Magmatoe@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

He is implicitly putting the blame on others. He's blaming the women for how they dress, and the employees for not enforcing the 'dress code'.

[-] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

True... But at least his solution is to remove himself from the situation as opposed to trying to make things change at the gym to suit his needs.

[-] Bobmighty@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago

My thoughts are that this is bait primarily.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 15 points 7 months ago

Christianism preaches so much compassion, yet also teaches Christians not to have compassion even for themselves, for what is the natural reactions of impulses of the mind and body. Feeling lust towards someone you're attracted to is natural. Feeling anger towards someone who harms you is natural. What matters is whether your actions you choose to commit after having those thoughts may bring harm to yourself or others, but when you think you have a security guard monitoring your thoughts every second of your life, it's much harder to reach that conclusion. Like another user said down here, this guy would have a much healthier life if he just had a wank when he came back home.

[-] vampire@lemmy.world 13 points 7 months ago

A lot of you are acting like he's trying to impose his will on others when he really isn't. If you fail to see that nuance, you're just as prejudice as the religious folks you love to hate. This is supposed to be religious cringe, not atheist cringe... but nowadays atheism is practically a religion too, so I guess it fits.

[-] threeduck@aussie.zone 21 points 7 months ago

The tone of Christian Gym Goer is teetering on incel. He doesn't take responsibility, he pushes that on to the "immodest women" who "don't follow the dress code".

If the mere presence of women in non-restrictive clothing causes Christian Gym Man to have to immediately pack up and exit the vicinity, that's really weird. This man need to learn some executive function, not complain about immodest women.

Also, the whole "so much for the tolerant left!" argument is so trite and weak. Intolerance OF intolerance is 100% necessary, and not equal on either side of the isle. The Christian intolerance of "I want to enforce women to a dress code because I can't control my sexual urges" is worse than "you shouldnt do that".

[-] vampire@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Ah, so we're policing tone. I see.

[-] boogetyboo@aussie.zone 7 points 7 months ago

'atheism is a religion ' - you 14, mate?

[-] vampire@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Intentionally leaving out the word "practically" when you misquote me is some underhanded shit and you know it.

Here's why I said atheism is P R A C T I C A L L Y a religion:

  • Total faith in a premise that cannot be proven or disproven
  • Rampant prejudice and misdirected hostility
  • Eagerness to maintain an in-group/out-group dynamic
  • Unearned sense of superiority

You are using the phrase "tone policing" in a way that makes me think you don't know what it means. threeduck isn't saying "wow this man shouldn't be complaining on the internet" or "boy, the wording in this post is HARSH", he is taking issue with the content of the post, where the man does not recognize that he himself is the originator of these thoughts and places blame (rather indirectly, but he's still doing it) on immodest women and dress codes.

His religion has taught him the thoughts themselves are spiritual poison instead of the truth: the thoughts are natural. It is important to recognize them, adjust your behavior depending on the content of those thoughts, and move on. It is natural to see a nice butt and feel attraction. It is not good to continue staring. This is why this post is in religious cringe: His religion has made him to feel as though his own thoughts are sinful, and removed his ability to cope with them in a healthy way. He is harmed.

I'm rather unhappy about you adopting the phrase "tone policing" here. This phrase is used to describe how oppressed peoples are critiqued when speaking of their oppression. They're told they are too loud, angry, harsh, etc when they are experiencing violence, loss of rights and property. This man is not oppressed, he just needs some self reflection. No one is taking issue with his tone, only with his inability to recognize his own agency in this situation. I do hope he found good advice on reddit.

[-] flying_sheep@lemmy.ml 9 points 7 months ago

The fact that he asked an open question didn't mean he doesn't judge. He mentions gym regulations and calls other people's behavior “immodest”. Of course he'd prefer a solution in which those harlots are taught how to dress properly.

Also your last line is a really tired cliche. Big “if you call me a Nazi, you're the real Nazi” vibes (and no, I didn't compare anyone to a Nazi)

I say this as an atheist, this man would do well by reading Matthew 18:9.

[-] blujan@sopuli.xyz 7 points 7 months ago

This part of the bible I still think makes sense as an atheist, people have to accept their own responsibility and stop blaming other people for their own fallings.

This guy in reddit sounds dangerous the way he talks about women and caving in.

My thoughts? You're a piece of shit and should absolutely leave that gym and do your workouts at home or behind bars where you more than likely belong.

[-] taanegl@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

Idea for gyms: sell horse-blinders. Call them "mind-your-own-business glasses", or MYOB glasses for short.
