Slightly off topic but your note about smarties reminds me of an elaborate experiment I participated in with my wife and kids. Several Canadians said that m&m's were better than smarties and I disagreed, strongly - until we did double blind taste testing and m&m's won as the better candy every time. I was shocked I tell you, shocked!
Now this was many years ago so it could be that smarties have improved (it was before they switched to all natural colors) or maybe m&m's have gone downhill due to cost-cutting or something. We might have to do a rematch.
In addition to darker chocolate, M&Ms also have a thinner candy shell compared to Smarties. Whether that is good or bad comes down to personal preference.
I think that if you're used to M&Ms DNS like the darker chocolate then they are going to win. I prefer the milk chocolate in Smarties but that's just me.
