It's really amazing how much damage his loss probably did to the world.

I can't think of any pro-wildlife "influencers" that would be at his level today, much less wherever he would have reached in the remaining years.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 37 points 6 months ago

David Attenborough's narrations for nature docs, maybe? But that's not really the same as watching a wildlife fanatic like Steve Irwin.

He has a son that seems eager to follow in his footsteps, so maybe he'll fill that void one day.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 15 points 6 months ago

But getting that kind of popularity is like being struck by lightning, especially now. He had a very advantageous start on TV (not to belittle how amazing he was).

[-] FarraigePlaisteach@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago

In the anglosphere maybe, which most of Lemmy seems to represent. I come across countless legends doing the same work but without the same recognition. When Greta Thunberg, who I admire, became big I read an article about all the people around her age that have been doing the same campaigning. They were mostly indigenous people so nobody came along with a TV show for them.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Yes there are so many indigenous cultures (certainly every one I've learned about in Canada) that are literally about working together with the earth and in balance with the earth. Steve Irwin was a wonderful person but imagine all the wiped out or nearly wiped out cultures where this was or continues to be literally their way of existing in the world, and they were dismissed for so long as "savages" for their relationship with nature.

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I shudder to think that Greta is attributed to Conservation in the same breath as Steve Irwin!

Greta should be at home and in school and preparing to live her life as an adult. If she as an adult became a climate activist and held the Top-7 or Top-10 or Top-20 corporations accountable, sure that would be commendable.

Nothing gets done blaming others and while taking no action against the wrongdoers. ~~yourself~~

[-] ASeriesOfPoorChoices@lemmy.world 23 points 6 months ago

She's 21. she's been an adult for a few years now. She is still a climate activist and is still holding corporations accountable and she is still commendable.

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Wonderful how we don't have any polluting corporations anymore ... wait ... it has gotten worse ...

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 months ago

The situation is certainly dire. Can you go into more about what Greta has been doing wrong and how laying low until adulthood would’ve helped?

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

There is strength in numbers. A single person isnt a hero. We dont live in a fantasy. Collective action is better. There are a million different ways to hold corporations accountable including working from within each one.

[-] areyouevenreal@lemm.ee 6 points 6 months ago

You don't think her going to protests is collective action?

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Grandstanding is wonderful! Makes you feel united ! So much standing around! Power of the masses!

/s in case it isnt obvious. Protests will work if the political will and political climate forces action from political leaders and people in power.

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 months ago

I promise I’m not playing dumb - could you offer an idiot’s guide:

  • thing one
  • thing two
  • [thing three] she did wrong

And

  • thing one*
  • thing two
  • [thing three] she should have done instead?

*work inside a corporation to dismantle climate destruction from the inside

Appreciate your time.

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

You are asking for a guidebook for something that doesnt exist. I am NOT THE EXPERT.

You wish to take down large corporations ? Sorry I am not that person.

You want an idiot's guide ??? Dude, idiots cannot fix these problems. You need experts.

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago

Ah, you mentioned working inside a company and I liked that idea, so I wanted to show you had provided something that would support your criticism.

I have an inkling young Greta knows more than both of us. Her Wiki is quite impressive! A portion:

Thunberg's climate activism began when she persuaded her parents to adopt lifestyle choices that reduced her family's carbon footprint. On 20 August 2018, at age 15, Thunberg began skipping school, vowing to remain out of school until after the national Swedish election in an attempt to influence the outcome. She protested outside the Swedish parliament where she called for stronger action on climate change by holding up a Skolstrejk för Klimatet (School Strike for Climate) sign and handing out informational flyers.

After the election, Thunberg spoke in front of her supporters, telling them to use their phones to film her. She then said that she would be continuing school striking for the climate every Friday until Sweden was in compliance with the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Thunberg's youth and blunt speaking manner fueled her rise to the status of a global icon.

Shortly after Thunberg's first school strike for the climate protest, other students engaged in similar protests in their communities. They then united and organized the school strike for climate movement under the banner of Fridays for Future. After Thunberg addressed the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, weekly student climate strike protests took place on Fridays around the world. In 2019, multiple coordinated multi-city protests involved over a million students each.

To avoid carbon-intensive flying, Thunberg sailed on a carbon-free yacht from Plymouth, England, to New York City where she attended and addressed the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit. In her speech, Thunberg scolded the world's leaders by exclaiming "How dare you" in reference to their perceived indifference and inaction to the climate crisis. Her admonishment made worldwide headlines.

Thunberg's rise to world fame made her an ad hoc leader in the climate activist community. She also faced heavy criticism, much of it mocking her as a naïve teenager. Thunberg's influence on the world stage has been described by The Guardian and other media outlets as the "Greta effect". She has received numerous honours and awards, including an honorary Fellowship of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, inclusion in Time's 100 most influential people, named the youngest Time Person of the Year in 2019, inclusion in the Forbes list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women (2019), and multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

After Thunberg graduated from high school in June 2023, her protest tactics began to escalate. As an adult, her protests have included defying lawful orders to disperse—defiant but peaceful confrontations with police—which have led to arrests, convictions, and one acquittal. Thunberg's activism has also evolved to include causes other than climate change, most notably taking a pro-Palestinian position triggered by the Israel–Hamas war.

Does she deserve our criticism?

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Perhaps doing things within our sphere of influence, not putting her on a pedestal. I am not naive enough to believe politicians or powerful people actually care enough to change things around. Good for Greta for doing what she can in her life, but again this is real life and not fantasy. No single person is a hero. Collective action and activism requires participation and positive results.

We are already past the point of return. All that is left is reducing the climate catastrophe length and duration.

I predict,

-2025 ---- we are going to see the first few degrees of sharp temperature rise.

2026, 2027, 2028, 2029 ---- fighting the weather anomalies with no effect.

-2030 ----- we might realise that nothing is working into reversing global climate fluctuations.

2031

2040 ---- if politicians act globally ( work from home, ban on individual international travel, shipping fully electric + wind-powered )

2041 ---- 2050 ---- Either previous decade effect is felt or chaos continues to buildup. Political will dies here. Dictatorships on the rise.

2051 ---- 2060 ---- Either 2 decades effect is felt or chaos slows down. Do normal people even exist ? Millionaires + peasants.

2061 ---- 2070 ---- Final 3 decades effect might start showing else chaos causes more issues. No one cares, everyone is infighting.

2081 ---- ---- ---- ---- Human civilization either survives or wiped out. Earth climate settles into a new normal. Cockaroaches are the new emergent species.

it really sounds like you're angry with the lies fox news has been telling you, while ignoring what was actually happening.

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Im not from Aussie land or 'Murica so no I dont know what "Fox" or Murdoch is pushing. Not angry. Just sad that Greta is put through all the crap when no excuses, no blaming, no apologies, no grandstandings. Get together and take action. Not simply stand around and protest.

[-] ASeriesOfPoorChoices@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

you're sad at the lies from whatever passes for fox news in your corner of India or whatever, panjeet.

You obviously have no idea what she's said or done, and that is what makes you pathetic.

[-] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 9 points 6 months ago

Nothing gets done blaming others and taking no action yourself.

You're literally complaining that she decided to take action too soon for your taste.

[-] maniii@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Silly me for pointing out that sensationalism and performance-activism hasnt done anything worth a dime or nickel to reign in the perpetrators of the climate catastrophe.

If Greta or similar persons could get a climate science degree and perhaps a political or law education and work to take down the system from within, perhaps we could stand a chance.

Spray-painting Van Gogh or the Stone Henge isnt solving anything. Neither is sailing around on a yatch around the world helping.
