A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

How about we place a safe route for uncontrolled immigrantion right around where you live? See the problem now?
I'm a South African who has used every ounce of privilege I could to escape to the Netherlands.
100% I don't deserve it I have so many friends back in South Africa, some who have doctorates that would be way more deserving than me.
I am only here due to being privvilaged enough that I could run away while affording all the complications that come from immigrating.
Where I come from we have a ton of uncontrolled immigration, it's only dangerous is you don't look after the desperate people who need help and especially dangerous when you try isolate them.
When your neighbour is suffering it doesn't matter how big your wall if you will suffer along with them.
I really doubt that PhDs have any trouble immigrating legally to any developed country using the existing channels. I did it years ago with just a University degree and some work experience.
What I'm absolutely opposed to is uncontrolled immigration where anybody who feels like it comes to my country. In the same way that I don't let strangers come to my home without my permission.
When my neighbor is suffering, I address that problem through means other than inviting them to my bedroom.
Go right ahead. My area is full of old people living in plastic McMansions, driving trucks they don't need, eating at franchise places that serve microwaved crap. I would love to see the types of communities and commerence here as I did in southeast Asia.
Exactly what I'm saying.
The best thing is most developed countries are suffering from an aging population, they actually need the immigrants, without them long term the country has a downward spiral coming.
There is a huge difference between uncontrolled immigration, where anybody who wants to get in does, and controlled immigration where the host country decides who gets in and under what conditions.
Maybe they should die. Really, think about it. The rich countries do everything they can to rest on their previous accomplishments and cut off any future growth. Regardless of what it does to their own young. Spoiled rotten, unable to do anything except teardown what they can't build.
If westerns can't fuck to save themselves from extinction and can't even stand the idea that they might meet someone of a slightly different background then let them die off.
Don't forget we are all going to be millionaires selling each other Bitcoin.
I hate to admit it but I do see the logic in what you're saying.
I wish I knew what this comment said.
I want to let people in who will contribute to our social system more than they take from it. This is achieved through a selective process, not by opening the doors to whoever wants to live here. That simple.
I am an immigrant myself. I followed the law. I did everything I was asked to do. Excuse me if I'm indignant at the idea of other people getting in illegally after all the effort and years it took me.
"How fucking convenient".
"How fucking convenient" that they think the laws don't apply to them.
"How fucking convenient" they get to pick and choose which country to live in, instead of the other way around.
"How fucking convenient" that you move the goalposts as you are proven wrong.
