There are literal “get out of jail free cards” that LEOs give to their friends and families. They are called police courtesy cards.

An NYPD spokesperson said the agency “will review the lawsuit if and when we are served.”

e.g. “we’re hoping this gets shut down before it ever reaches our lawyers”

A PBA spokesperson did not comment directly on the cards but said in a statement that the union “does not set policies regarding the way that police officers perform their duties. […] The law and NYPD policies afford police officers discretion in taking enforcement action”

e.g. we would never codify this, that would be proof of corruption, instead it’s just an unwritten rule we can use to support further corruption
