Ok a friend of mine asked me a question and tbh I’m wondering if perhaps I’m saying it wrong, as I’m not Aussie born (but have lived here a long, long time)

How do you say Melbourne and can you spell it out phonetically for me please

Melbn. No vowels after the e. Squish it all together.

Another way to put it is that it's like 'melb' followed by the sound of the 'en' of the word 'given'

The way I say it rhymes with Sheldon.

The Mel part is like Mao as in chairman Mao. The Bourne part is more like Ben but as if a Kiwi says it so it's more like b'n. Now you put them together Maob'n = Melbourne. Completely exceptable to throw an l in the middle.

mel like smell but without the S and then b'n

Melb'un with a nasal inflection on the 'un'

Not Aussie born either and will never lose my homeland accent, but I've been told my pronunciation is pretty good

Sorry, posted my comment in the wrong place like a dickhead.

Mel-born personally. If I feel fancy I might chuck a u in there.

With the salary-celery merger that is especially prevalent in Melbourne:
