What's really scary is how little coverage these cameras/this company/these stories get in Europe.

Very, very little, if any. I don't think that I've seen it heard anything other than what I see on Lemmy.

I just had to explain them to a US American. Surprisingly not everyone knows about them

Wait it's not talked about over the pond? They're a hugely controversial and admonished thing here in the states. The panopticon, if you will

I'm not the most up to date on the news, but I've seen no coverage at all about Flock here in Sweden. Palantir is more widely known, because our military is making use of the tech, as is Polisen.

I've seen a couple of surveillance towers in my town. It's hellishly dystopian.

Edit: So an article came out today saying that they're going to implement real time face detection systems. Great!

I haven't seen them mentioned once in any of the media. That doesn't mean that they haven't been, it is just likely that any mention of them is a small story that could easily be glossed over.

Do cops in Europe handle their cameras better?

I believe the first case where someone was falsely arrested due to a facial recognition error was a black person in the UK.

They don't have bodycams here. And handing over cctv footage to the police is voluntary afaik, they can't demand footage with a warrant.

Many countries have only just got bodycams, many do not still have them.

Public CCTV has grown where I am, but nothing like Flock.

Afaik the police is not corrupt in Europe, just a little bit backwards in some countries

They're corrupt, but not yet on the scale that is seemingly mentioned over there.
