As part of the devs farewell message on their site, they have included malicious code to make each visitor sends 2,000 requests to the dbzer0 servers in an attempt to DDOS and take the instance offline.

I still don't know what Tesseract is and now I guess I don't need to care.

It's a frontend. So literally a skin to make a website look prettier and more organized.

Imagine a waiter starts telling customers what foods they are allowed to eat. He wasn't the chef, the manager, the owner, anybody.

That's how stupid it was.

And then when the customer pushed back against his advice, he added rat poison to their order.

And then shit on the floor screaming about how it's all the customer's fault that he's losing his job, before storming out of the restaurant.

It's a front end to change the UI of lemmy, and others like lemmy. you can see some examples of others here: https://www.lemmyapps.com/ . Filter by web app to see some of the other popular ones.

So a client like Sync et al? Or something slightly different?

[-] jaygray91@piefed.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

It kind of is, considering it's still an app of sorts, but using the web browser. I just keep using "front end" because that's what others call it. I see it like an app. but yeah, it's to change the UI if you don't like the default lemmy UI.

Don't have to install anything. Some instance make it the default though, but I think most front end like Voyager or Alexandrite (or tesseract since we are discussing it) you can visit their web page and point your home instance to use their UI.

Edit; I'm copying a comment someone else made here https://piefed.zip/comment/6322459 since it's pretty consise than what I explained ๐Ÿ˜…
