Heatwaves in London are strange. You see a few people outside in light sweaters. It's like they don't know what to do. It's like they don't own t-shirts

But a heat wave in London is, what? 25 degrees?

[-] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 6 points 21 hours ago

Last big heatwave hit 35 here and I'm only an hour and a bit away from the edge of London

[-] rapchee@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

unfortunately it did go over 30° the last time i was there. but tbf also that's the hottest it gets

[-] db2@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

That's only 86F. It's not a heat wave in the US until it's in the mid 90s. That's 35 Celsius.

That 111 you see is 43.9C.

yeah it's not bad globally, but it is pretty bad for london, the infrastructure isn't prepared for it
esp because it's pretty humid as well, sweating doesn't do much

[-] db2@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

Yeah, the humidity also doesn't compare. The US is, as with most things especially lately, way worse.

None of this means the UK has it easy, don't misunderstand. It means the people stuck in the US are in a crazy land of stupid things which includes the weather. But at least there aren't Australian murder fauna I guess.

62% humidity outside right now, 99° F "real feel", 92° F "real feel shade". 88° F actual temp.

I think what folks from not humid places don't realize is how hot the shade is. Shade is always better than sun, obviously, but it sort of only takes the feeling of the sun against your skin. The air is still hot. I'd compare it to a sauna sort of. Like it's still stuffy.

The first time my wife went to somewhere that actually has dry heat she said it was amazing. She was actually cold in the shade. Not just cool. That concept is so foreign to me.

40C in London in 2022,

https://www.londonworld.com/news/weather/heatwave-london-weather-highest-ever-temperature-recorded-uk-heathrow-airport-3773879

37.7C last month (June 2026)

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2026/june-2026-heatwave-a-recap-of-the-temperature-records (for avoidance of confusion those are the records for June - the 40C was July 2022)

Anything over 28C is currently classified as a heatwave, but I think they're going to have to revisit that, or just say "all summer is a heatwave try not to die" given 32-35C has been consistently hit pretty much every summer this decade.

I always wear long sleeved shirts, because I burn very quickly and don't want skin cancer and I really dislike applying sunscreen all the time.

[-] OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net 2 points 22 hours ago

Same, but when it's 30c+ outside there's a huge difference between us going out wearing long sleeved linen shirts and light trousers, and the handful of people I always end up seeing (at least!) wearing puffer jackets and wooly hats.
