It is permissible to praise Valve, Steam and Gabe Newell here on the condition that you explicitly state that you still don't like them. This can be a disclaimer in your post or comment but I encourage doing so in your user flair for convenience. Failing to do so will result in a ban. This rule will be enforced with an iron fist.
It's not like anyone didn't know it made perfect sense in an economic standpoint. "Buying" software and downloading it straight from the internet is much, much more convenient than buying physical copies, I know that, you know that, everyone knows that. People that cling to physical media are minorities, we know that.
"You will own nothing", but we will be fucking miserable
I think this is in part caused by the requirement to keep the disc in console for the license to be active. It’s frigging inconvenient!
Microsoft wanted license to be assigned to console from disc when they revealed Xbox One but that soldier in Afghanistan who wouldn’t be able to play Halo while on break from war crimes was enough to cause so much outrage among gamers that it was the only thing that Microsoft walked back from that presentation. In hindsight, it would make physical copies that much more attractive since most people are always online these days anyway.
Gamers are again to blame for their misfortunes.
