I think this is in part caused by the requirement to keep the disc in console for the license to be active. It’s frigging inconvenient!
Microsoft wanted license to be assigned to console from disc when they revealed Xbox One but that soldier in Afghanistan who wouldn’t be able to play Halo while on break from war crimes was enough to cause so much outrage among gamers that it was the only thing that Microsoft walked back from that presentation. In hindsight, it would make physical copies that much more attractive since most people are always online these days anyway.
Gamers are again to blame for their misfortunes.
