In my experience of the various Christian denominations evangelical churches reflect most rhe attitudes of their congregation. One of the interesting things about the catholic church is that doctrine has been developed over centuries, which means that it's largely set in stone. Catholics might not like some aspects of it, but it's the churc it is consistent and it's a worldwide church. Many of the modern reforms came about because you can't have racist leaders in a church that serves every nation everywhere. You lose followers. What led to the reforms was a reaction to the events of ww2, and notice it took 20 years to reach them. Slow deliberate careful change thar doesnt break centuries of doctrine.

At the same time a lot of Catholics see the evangelical churches reflecting their secular beliefs, and even couch them in religious fervor, and they want the same from their church. But the problem is that modern conservatism is a corporate branded capitalist enterprise, and a lot of the religious messages in evangelical churches come from the same wealthy capitalist source, see prosperity doctrine. The catholic church with its many flaws doesnt do that. And that's where the tension is here. In the present day you have Catholics who want to praise God and trump along with everything they think he stands for. And the two are mutually exclusive.

But this is how far they are willing to go.
