I will never understand Lemmy’s obsession with trying to make the left fight itself.

From my own viewpoint as somebody living in Europe but not in the UK (though I lived there for over a decade), there are a lot of people here from places like the US and the UK who think they're Leftwing and yet are just parroting the slogans of the mainstream "supposedly left-of-center whilst in practice hard right" parties with authoritarian tendencies in those countries (Democrats in the US, New Labour in the UK).

People in countries with VERY to the Right Overtoon Windows have been deceived into thinking they're leftwing all the while claiming (again and again, for decades) that leftwingers have an obligation to vote for Hard Neoliberals to stop the Fascists and looking at other human beings and them seeing first and foremost as members of identitarian groups based etnicity, gender or sexual orientation (the exact same perspective as the Fascists) who they claim should be treated differently from other groups whilst calling with no irony that their desired differentiated treatment based solely on etnicity, gender or sexual orientation is "positive" and "fighting for equality" even whilst avoiding the whole "for all without looking at skin color, gender or sexual orientation" Equality part of the real fight for Equality.

There are tons of infighting in the Left, but what we see here in Lemmy is mainly not that but rather liberals from Anglo-Saxon nations thinking they're leftwingers and attacking actual leftwing ideas.

We can definitelly see some infighting between Communists, Socialists, Anarchists and Social Democrats in those places where hexbear hasn't been blocked but the main supposedly leftwing "infighting" we see in Lemmy (especially in the lemmy.world communities) is right-of-center (neo)liberals from English-speaking countries vs people with policy preferences mainly fitting the Social Democrat spectrum who aren't even ideological Social Democrats.

(All of this IMHO, of course)

Beautifully and articulately explained. Kudos.

I don’t think you’re totally wrong, but I think it’s a piss poor excuse to force in-fighting on the left. Those on the right have the same Overton window spread but they don’t seem to have any issue uniting to make everybody else miserable.

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

If you look at the Republicans in the US, they definitelly have internal fights - Trump might have temporarilly succeeded in getting them all to push in the same direction, but that's the natural outcome of coming up with a formula for electoral success and is now breaking with all the shit that's coming out about him and he is doing in his second term.

Ditto in countries with more Democratic voting structures and hence more the just 2 parties, were the center-Right is fighting with at least the Far-Right.

And by the way, in those countries with the Overton Window very much to the Right, those on the right by definition don't have the same Overton spread since there's a lot less room Rightwards from the center of it than there is leftwards.

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I used to think there was less spread on the right too, that there was no way that they could push further right… then I learned about my people’s history as just one for instance. Please trust me on this, there is just as much room to the right of center as there is to the left and they always seem to be able to overcome their fights, hence how the Overton window got there in the first place.

Lmao you think the dems are left?

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago

Look at you holding up tradition lol

[-] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 days ago

You know they're a center right party, right?

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Yes I do, but that’s not the point.

[-] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 days ago

... If they're right, they're not left.

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago

Even the most jaded neoliberal should be able to be honest enough with themselves to understand that the Democratic Party is a hodgepodge party of leftists and liberals.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 7 points 2 days ago

It's a hodgepodge party of liberals, which leftists sometimes feel pressured to side with because the only other viable party is marginally worse.

Look up "third-way politics"
