It's only a matter of time until people get upset enough from extreme weather...

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

They'll just keep blaming it on the queers.

yeah I meant something else with my original comment...

Sure, but I know what's gonna actually happen.

I think we actually have to wait for old people to die.

My dad saw a presentation once, which was enough to convince him that global warming isn't real. Or rather that the earth warms and cools naturally (true) so humans have nothing to do with it (not true).

If anyone ever asks:

It's not the absolute global temperature that's the problem, it's the rate of change.

Here's the last 800 thousand years. That massive spike at the end is the problem. It's had much more CO2/heat in the past, but it's the rate of change that's the problem. Here's the last 70 million years, and it has been higher a long time ago but earth naturally changes pretty slowly at a few different cyclical periods, or over even longer periods of time.

If it increased naturally up to 430 ppm over time (like hundreds of thousands or millions of years), then life would have time to adapt. But it has shot up in less than 150 years and life just can't evolve or adapt that quickly.

edit: oh I didn't realize I'm in the Climate community, so people here probably know the above. This is meant for more general communities who may have heard about Fossil Capital's propaganda but don't actually know themselves what's true.

I'm not a member of this community, but it did show up on my "home feed". While I knew the gist of your comment, it's good to have a refresher, plus anyone that doesn't know would be well served by reading it. Thank you for posting it :)

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
